Spyderco Neck Knife II

Since I see little hope of the original thread returning to the topic of a possible Spyderco neck knife, I started this one.

As I had mentioned, my specs for an ideal concealed carry neck knife w/sheath are: <= 7" OAL; <= 4 oz, the lighter the better; and, not much more than 1/4" thick, including scales. As to blade shape, I'd like to see something a bit more general purpose than a Wharncliffe. I think a satin finished Frank Centofante tapered spearpoint would be great combined w/thin white micarta scales & a minimal-size CF pattern Concealex sheath.

With these specs in mind, I took the liberty of modifying a pic of a C50 Centofante.

I left the handle black but, as mentioned above, I would prefer white micarta. I tried to maximize the blade to handle ratio w/o sacrificing a secure grip. As I hope you can tell, this is intended to be a 3-finger grip where the pinkie finger would curl behind the handle for support. I had attempted to add the appearance of grooves on the top front portion of the handle & the first half-inch or so of blade but, as you can tell, I'm not a graphic artist & they looked horrible so I took them out. Please imagine the design with the grooves.

, I'd appreciate hearing your comments on the concept.

Nice work, Brian.

As a dedicated neck knife fan I applaud your efforts!

My own personal preference would be for something with a bit more belly to it. That would (in my view) help it serve well as a utility knife, which is how I primarily view mine.

Good food for thought. And yet another possible addition to the burgeoning collection of neckwear!

Good idea Brian. Leaving the other thread behind not a bad idea either! I would personally have the handle be a little less curved maybe, but the blade style is fine. Although, upon further reflection, a handle shape like you've shown would make the knife index better for low light/stealthy draw.
Anyhow, does not look like Sal has much interest in this type of project, unfortunately. Still, it's an interesting idea.

Now that would get me more interested in the neck knife market. Great job on the mock-up!

Thanks for the comments, guys. Actually, Blues, a C25 (small Centofante) is one of my favorite "dress pants" knives. Although I wouldn't want to attempt to skin anything with it, I find it to be a pretty useful utility blade. The Centofante doesn't have much belly to begin with & I'm afraid that I may have flattened out what little was there when I erased the original background from the picture.

Brian, I played around with a couple of different handle shapes & I'm not totally pleased with this exact one either. I do think, however, that widening it out at least a bit would help in retention & prevent it from twisting in the hand.

Keep those ideas coming. Maybe if we nag Sal enough...

Who knows -- it's happened before.

Thanx for the input. I not oppossed to a neck knife. Just have too many things on the plate right now to try to manufacture another model. We could have fun in R & D though. I'll get a chance to see Fred Perrin this Spring. I'd like some input from him.

Our design would have to be relatively invisible under a "T" shirt.

Grip is essential. Difficult on smaller knives.

Nice pic Brian.

IMO "handle to blade ratio" is more of a "looks" think than actual. "Handles are for holding, blades are for cutting" Scalpels have large handles for control and small blades because tht is what is needed to do the job.

Sorry about the other thread. But I have faith that the Forumites have the necessary class & intellingence to bring it back to "proper". At least the ones that visit here.

I'm glad to hear that you're not against the idea of a neck knife, Sal. You know how patient we are.

I'm also delighted to hear that you'll be seeing Fred Perrin in the Spring. Now THAT would be a collaboration!

Brian, good try with the graphics, a picture is worth a thousand words and all that.
I like the idea of grooves on top for indexing but I would also like grooves on the rear of the handle to assist in retention with foward strikes/slices.
For drawing moves the handle as it is has sufficiant bellie to allow a solid grip.

I was gratified to read Sal's thoughts on blade/handle proportions. My sentiments, exactly. If you can't hold it, you ain't gonna cut with it.
One of the best HANDLING folders I own is a Lakota Pro'Hawk. Lots handle and (for me) enough cutting edge. I have had people (who have only seen pictures) tell me it is "all handle". Their loss.

I would be interested in a neck knife similar to the one you have pictured. But do you think Micarta handles are easy enough to hold onto in an emergency situation? I think they may be too slick.(Just my opinion) I do agree it needs to be fairly small and lightweight. I also am glad to hear it is not completely off the table at Spyderco. Thanks for the new thread on this.
