Spyderco nut needs Benchmade, SOG, and Kershaw recommendations

- BM710 in M390 is available now online for $150
- You can find BM950 Rifts available on Ebay or in the Exchange section for less than $150. I love that design of this knife...I wish it was in M390 or M4 or CPM3V.
- If you like assisted opening, you can get a BM 581 Barrage in M390 for about $190...look in the exchange and I bet you can get one around $150
- Another assisted opening is the BM 890 Torrent. Slick albeit light duty design.

I don't know much about SOG or Kershaw.

SOG access card may be something for you.

the VG10 blade is good, and you mentioned that stainless handles were OK on smaller knives. the arc lock makes it really easy and smooth to open and close with one hand. you might have to go a bit over your 50 dollar SOG budget to get it though. I think it's a good knife worth the money.

SOG flash 2 is cheaper, but it'll still cut like a knife. as long as you don't put it through work knives aren't made to.

benchmade i would get the large bone collector with the walnut handles. gives you the axis lock and a nice feel in hand.also check out the 950 RIFT in the charcoal and handle...sexy got mine for 65 used on this forum. for kershaw leek looks like a good knife dont have one but i want to get one in the future....now

STAY AWAY FROM SOG FOLDERS. i can not in good faith recommend one at all have a flash 2 and the thing is a P.O.S. i actually prefer my cheap SMITH & WESSON over it. thats sayin something.. if you have to get a sog get a seal pup elite fixed blade. those are good for light task

I'll second the BM 'Bone Collector' models - regular = 15020 or mini = 15030. Add a -2 for the nice walnut handles: mini $140; regular $155 MSRP. D2 steel and AXIS lock - like the 710. A 'Spydie-like' blade hole, for easy entry to the BM world, too.

Well, I've just about decided to get the Kershaw Blur rather than the Speed Bump. The Speed and Spec Bump are a bit too tactical looking for my EDC. Plus I have a few Spydercos that fill that aggressive knife role. The Blur is a bit plain Jane, really, but from watching videos, I think it's the ideal size for me and the price is good.

For BM, I'm still considering the 710, 940, 950 and mini-barrage. For this type of money, I want to be in love with the knife. And none are really calling my secret name yet.

I did order a Spyderco Yojimbo 2 today, however. So, again, there's something about Spyderco designs that make me want to open my wallet faster than with Benchmade.

I was planning on recommending the 710 before I saw you mention it in your post. It's a bit long for your listed preference, but frankly after EDCing my 710M2HS or BBK Woodsman for a few months anything smaller (i.e. my mini-grips) feels like a toy. The 710 is the perfect EDC IMO, it is the perfect size and weight so that you know it's there and can access it instantly without feeling like there's a big chunk of steel in your pocket. You wont have to fiddle with your grip, the ergonomics and texture make the knife slip into a comfortable and firm grip easily and the opening is jaw dropping. I love the flipper on my BBK but the 710 open much faster and with zero wrist movement, you do not need a benchmade assisted opener, just watch this if you don't believe me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lm_5AoJxaTI#t=5m40s . Two disclaimers here: I have no personal experience with Benchmade's D2 steel but I know some people swear by it and some do not. Second, the recurve on the 710 is shallow, but unsuitable for regular benchstones; if you have a sharpmaker, a lansky (thin enough stones), sandpaper & a dowel, or some other method for sharpening recurve you will be fine. If you use Japanese/Arkansas/DMT stones you do not want the 710 for your edc.

edit:
If Gunsnknives is willing to tell you where you can get a 710M390 for $150.00 (and me too please!) DO IT. I hope you are not married because you will have a love affair with that knife.

My EDC is a Para 2 and just a smidge behind is my BM Ritter Griptilian. I'm very, very happy with both of these knives.

I hope you are not married because you will have a with that knife.

Sorry, I don't follow this. BTW, I'm not married but have a serious girlfriend. She has some inkling I'm into knives. :)

Wasn't aware the 710 isn't assisted open, but that's probably ok. I like the size. It's on the large end of what I want, but based on the video, not really over it.

I can't see me getting a bunch of Benchmades, but I want to have one that might make me forget about Spydercos for a few days at a time.

Dont forget there is a mini Onslaught knife now also, and that is just a Lum masterpeice, imho.

There's not NEARLY enough pron in here.

Benchmade adamas, Sog Vulcan (any), kershaw blur s30v, buck vantage pro s30v, cold steel recon 1 or ak47...I got a ton of them.

I've been a Spyderco nut since I first got my hands on one about 92. About the same time I got into SOG fixed blades, I love the Pentagon and Mini Pentagon. I decided awhile back to give the SOG Aegis line a try, and with the big and little ones I've been pretty happy.

I like my Buck Vantage Pro but it isn't assisted. The only assisted knife I have is the Kershaw Leek and I think it is a quintessential assisted EDC knife: light yet sturdy feeling, good steels, good pocket clip, and good deployment. I almost got the Sog Flash 1 instead, but while I was researching I found a lot of people felt that it was cheap feeling, too small, and the blade-opening lock would rattle while deployed. But that is just what I READ ABOUT, not from personal experience. The only negative thing about Leeks I've seen are the fine tip maybe being too fragile, and mine definitely isn't for what I do with it, cut things.

I will second the GLDNDomer's comments on the Sog flash 1. It is at best a toy. Very light - true. But feels hollow and plastic. Mud Shrimp Moe - if you are even considering a flash1 - let me know and I will send you mine. It will save you the regret of having bought one for yourself. And make more room in my collection...

I too am what you might call a Spyderco person so I would recommend knives that are not like Spydercos. The BM 755 MPR is unlike any Spyderco I know of and is excellent in fit and finish as well as utility. The only SOG folder I would recommend are the Japan-mades (Architech, Facet, etc) and they are high for your price range. I would recommend the Kershaw Spec/Speed Bumps/Ti Bumps, but you have already eliminated them because of the aggressive look.

A couple more Kershaw suggestions: the Boa and the Ram. The Ram is a flipper, but still cool.

The Ram is the 2nd, the Boa is the 4th.
