Spyderco or Benchmade

My advice is to own both the spiderco delica and benchmade mini grip as a starting knife nut. Can always sell or gift the one that does not float your boat.

Depends on how much the mini grip is going for. At the new prices the dragonfly all day, but i would take the delica over it.

The AFCK came in a blue box. I can't open my Southard using the thumb hole. The detent is too strong. I just use the flipper.

AFCK is discontinued anyway. But that is interesting about the Southard. I can see how that makes sense though since its covered up partially. I would have to sell a few knives to afford that one unfortunately.

That's really interesting, the Southard is one of my favorite knives to open by the thumb hole. I must be weird though, because pretty much everyone hates the Southard thumb hole :p

If it's a user and you want to go less expensive, I'd get a Kershaw Leek 1660CB. Any Benchmade that is under 3" with an axis lock would be a nice step up, though. The 707 is much nicer than the mini-grip, too, since it doesn't have a plastic handle (I break so much fiber-reinforced nylon in one of my other hobbies that I don't trust the stuff).

Mind you, I'm biased. I have an intense, visceral, negative reaction to holes in a knife blade, which is why I don't own a Spyderco.

Love my dragonflies (vg10, zdp, & h1). I also love my 555hg MG & i really like 556 s30v. I would say start with 555hg, then later to DF2 vg10. perhaps zdp DF2 after that. I personally think DF2 is near perfect edc knife for many, but 555hg is more fun & behave as more common knife that teaches me about knife use&care than df2. For the same reason I believe u should start with vg10 then move onto zdp if you really like df2.
I would say get a mini grip while you can still get the discount!

A great suggestion if money isn't an object. Be careful, both come very sharp.

I like Benchmade's designs and absolutely love the axis lock....but Spyderco knives ship with a much better edge on them. That's something Benchmade really needs to freaking figure out.

Tanner, is there a possibility your parents (you know those people who are paying for your gift) might stumble across this site and your thread?

I ask because if one of my kids said "its my birthday so money isnt too big an issue" and then followed that up with how they dont have a job or contribute anything to their upbringing I can tell you without a doubt they wouldn't get a single thing after making a comment like that...

Just my 2¢ as a parent.

Now of someone asked me mini-grip vs dragonfly without the rest of the ungreatfull jargon first thing I'd ask is specifically what mini-grip, and specifically what dragonfly they were considering. I have multiple's of both and the 555(HG) is my favorite knife hands down, yet at the same time my ZDP dragonfly is my most carried knife, it gets carried every single day regardless of what other knives I'm carrying.

Edit: I'm leaving what I said, but I will offer a little bit more advice since I was a little hard on you- I'd say the mini-grip... The dragonfly is a great knife and so useful but everyone deserves an axis lock, obviously going to school you can't carry all day every day like most of us do, so when you can carry you may as well get the most enjoyment possible from your knife, and in terms of what one makes me happier overall (looking past their merits as a knife) I'd say the mini-grip and its axis lock provide me more enjoyment than even the super steel of my ZDP dragonfly.

However of you wanted to save your parents a little money the FFG VG-10 dragonfly is a awesome cutting tool and at 2.25" is pretty much acceptible everywhere locking knives are legal, if you really want to go crazy consider the SE dragonfly salt, talk about a "little big knife", that's one mean knife right there.

Maybe I missed something in another thread but I do not see anywhere that Tanner mentioned his parents paying for the knife. If he did in another thread he did state here that there was a limit and that money was not a huge limitation to a certain point. I find it interesting that every time a young person opens their mouth here someone feels compelled to scold them or to teach them a lesson. That is what his parents are for and I am sure that if they are buying the knife they already know what they are planning on spending. I dont want to throw stones but I see this happening quite often and I do not think that it is our job as forum members to chastise someone elses kid who by the way is a young man who I am sure does not need the commentary when he is asking for help. Nuff said- "Benchmade"

Though both companies make great knives, Spyderco provided better value for the money before the Benchmade price increase. Now ......

This. I was a BM fanboy until I got hooked on the PM2. It's one of the cheapest folders I own, but it sees more pocket time than anything else. Benchmade still makes amazing knives and I'll still buy them, but now you're getting the same knife you paid $50 less for a year ago.

Spyderco Dragonfly in ZDP-189 would be my choice.
FRN doesn't seem to crack as easy as the Noryl GTX Benchmade uses.
ZDP-189 is a super steel that will beat out the 154cm any day.
The Spyderhole is my favorite, though as said the 555hg has it.
The FFG makes it a much better slicer and the small size but nice grip makes it even better for EDC no matter where you are.

If you decided to go Delica as mentioned earlier in the thread, I suggest the Spyderco Delica in Gray FRN and Super Blue steel. You can get it below the price of the Mini Grip and you get an amazing knife with an even more amazing steel.

However, if after all of this you still decide on the Mini Grip.. get a Ritter Mini Grip. Best Mini Grip out there in my opinion.

I suggest a Bone Collector or a Grip with the sheepsfoot blade so you can get both the Axis lock and opening hole feature.
Or a Manix2 because the CBB lock is similar to the Axis.

These knives would let you get a feel for both companies.
