If the 940 has the same handle width/thickness of the 710, I wouldn't buy it. I loved the 710 until I held it and then realized it was too small to get a grasp of. The para 2 looks sweet. I'd wait a bit and go with that.

The 710 was too small to grab ahold of?

Anyway, the 940 and Paramilitary are very different knives. The Calypso 3 is probably a better comparison to the 940, and the Griptillian is a better comparison to the Paramilitary, or perhaps a 520 or 615.

In either case, you can't really go wrong with any of them. Best bet would be to find a B&M store that has some for you to handle.

FWIW, the 2 knives that I carry more often than any others are a BM940 and a Caly3.

the 710 is bigger than the 940, and the 940 is almost too much knife for me...

the 4.5" handle is plenty.... you must have some monster hands. mine aren't small, and the 940 fills them

I did not vote. The choice is really all about the use of the knife. The para is a heavier-duty knife with much more "belly" on the blade, more of a small tac folder. I like the compression lock and feel that if my purpose for the knife was tactical, outdoor or duty use I would choose the para.

On the other hand, my user name is "benchmade" (backwards). I really love the axis lock (very lefty friendly) as well as failsafe (4 years so far no failures even when packed with dirt). I also am very impressed with the reverse tanto blade and overall feel of the 940. (although I prefer the CF or Ti scale version over the aluminum). The 940 is a tough, well built EDC that is also elegant and very sheeple friendly. It doesn't have that tactical look and I use it in public frequently with no worries or hassles.

Again, my $.02 is that there is really no comparison as these 2 are not apples to apples.

The rift is a sweet knife. I own one now and owned a griptilian a while ago, but that was a good one too. The 710 was too small to have a comfortable grip on. The paramilitary is probably just as thin or thinner, but the distance from the spine to the edge of the handle where the blade goes in is much greater....from memory anyway. Just a personal thing, definitely handle the knives if you can.

Where are you people getting the idea that the 710 is a small knife? I think you must be confusing it with something else. The 710 is way bigger than the 940 in every dimension. I don't think I've ever heard someone say the 710 is not enough knife. Most often you hear comparisons between the 710 and the Millie, not the Para.

I had a 940 for a couple years, and never did get see any benefit from that reverse tanto. I gave the 940 away and got a 943, which is a classy little knife. I've even put my beloved 960's away for the 943. The blade seems to be much more in proportion to the handle for some reason.

Anyway, I'm waiting for the new Para. I think they have made some very worthy improvements. Just my take on it though.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I think I'm going to go with a second paramilitary. In a year or so, if I still like the 940, it will probably still be around.

The only thing I don't really care for on the 940 is the reverse tanto blade style. Its weird to me.

Maybe a 943 is more your style. :)

940 is currently my favorite sub-$200 knife. I *really* like the reverse-tanto blade-style and own *many* of them.

(caveat - I don't have a Para to compare. I'll pick up a Para-2 when released and come back with a reply)

I got my new paramilitary in a few days ago. I'm very happy with my decision.

My knife collection is turning into a Spyderco collection.

Congrats on your new Paramilitary. I am not sure if it was the D2 or S30V that you got, but either way, they make a fine pair.

Congratulations with your new knife!

I like both knives and like the reversed tanto on the Benchmade (strong tip) but prefer the Para-Military.
