I was just wonderin how smoothly this knife opens. It looks like it might be one of those knives that is tight on the opening due to the bolsters and appearant lack of pivot screw. -Thanks for the help.

Don't own one, but have handled about 3 of the full size. They all had smooth opening. Fit and finish was good as well as lock-up.

The large version, getting tough to find, is the only one I have experience with. I received their last NIB Persian from an online retailer recently (so I didn't have an opportunity to try before the buy).

Out of the box: it was more difficult to open than more recent Spyderco models I own. The pivot was sticky and the entire knife is smooth. Combine those two features and you get sticksliption.

I've only cleaned and photographed it at this point. I haven't tried to butter up the action yet. I am in awe of its beauty at this point. I figure that it will be a safe queen for now.

Thanks. Nice pic. Do you think it can be flicked open after a breakin in period and some oil? Or will it remain pretty tight, yet smooth?

Maybe.

Mine, out of the box, cannot be spyder-dropped easily (in spite of the mass and weight of this solid knife). I just tried and it takes a strong move to open the knife just holding the knife upside-down with only your thumb and first finger touching thru the hole and then throwing the knife sharply downward. Doing this runs the risk of throwing the knife to the ground with such a stiff action.

Lube and working the action probably would decrease sticksliption. However, the stickyness is one way to determine a new knife vs a used knife.

If I was to make it a user I would lube and work the action until I was happy.

It is my pleasure.

Thank you for your compliment on the picture.

I hope you have a terrific Thanksgiving.

By the way, do you know where to buy a C83, large, Persian?

All the best,

I was actually planning on searching e-bay a bit.
Happy thanksgiving to you as well, and to everyone here.

I have my eye on the mini-Persian (75mm).

Any thoughts on that one compared to its fullsize cousin?

Purely personal preference on my part but I avoid small knives.

With the large, collectible, Persian still available for less than $100 I can't see getting the smaller version. However, if you really like the production Persians then you should consider getting both of course.:D

The same with me. I have 3 Persians at this point (one more in a mail). All of them was difficult to open. The first Persian I bought three month ago and carry it every day, it is easy to open now (two others are backups and I did not use them yet). It was a thread on Spyderco Forum (at spyderco.com) about Persian and Ed gave advice how to smooth it fast, but I just used it. Great knife, one of my favorites, it is in my FRP now.

They are so very well made. And, the design is outstanding. Who could refuse, I couldn't, such a perfect combination of attributes. Ahhhhh, such beauty, and it cuts!

I wondered where they all went. :D

IIRC, Ed said that he blasted them out with WD-40

Spyderco Forum is up and running, so I was able to find that thread.
Ed wrote " I flush with WD 40, blow it out with compressed air and relube with a synthetic oil. I recommend that you do this maintanance on a regular or annual basis. Enjoy the knife...Take Care...Ed"

I bought two of them after you got yours. I just watching auctions and sometimes just cannot resist to a good deal. It is discontinued; I have to have backup. This is the most comfortable knife for my hand. The only improvement I can think, it would be full flat grind.

Full flat grind would make imo this knife perfect.
I enjoy the full flat grind on my Spydie Stretch so much in day to day use.
I like a knife that you can use as a hunter, for SD and also to prepare food.
A general purpose man's knife, as they use to carry in the old days.
Such knives make you happy:) :) :)

Both models of the Persian are awesome knives!! As already said, they are all tight at first, but will loosen up nicely.
Nice picture oregon!!

I just ordered a full size Persian and a Stretch....you gentlemen, will be the financial ruin of me yet. However, when they come to take me away, in chains, to debtors prison.....I will go willingly, with a smile on my face...and a full sized Persian in one pocket, and a Stretch in the other. :D

- my very best regards to you gentleman, one and all !

Congrats Gramps,

With buying such great knives.
I think you will use the (underestimated)Stretch the most. His flat grind
blade makes this the perfect day to day EDC.
