Spyderco P'kal- Utility EDC

I received the P'kal about two weeks ago and was really suprised by the extreme high quality of the knife- even for a Spyderco. The ball lock, blade, wire clip and handle are all flawless.

The only waved knife I owned before this one was a gunting that I cut the horn off of and a fellow forum member put a clip on for tip up carry. I never cottoned to the whole wave thing, and the gunting sits in a drawer somewhere. Being a member of TPI, I watched and read how to carry and deploy the P'kal. Carried it a few days like that, but for utility purposes I could not get used to it. So, I removed the wave and have carried it waveless ever since, and I couldn't be happier w/ the performance. This knife will cut like no tomorrow. The "what would appear to be an awkward handle" is really comfortable in ALL grips; with the g-10 it's still very grippy even when wet.

I change where I carry the knife all day long, mostly waist where a wave is unadviseable and then to pocket for driving. I keep it high in the pocket where Southnarc wears it. Works well for sitting. To recap: no blade movement when locked, ultra smooth and quiet opening and closing, sharp as h*** blade w/ a centered point and somewhat hawkbilled/wharncliff blade, unobtrusive and comfortable clip, super duper heavy duty lock...

My point is don't be put off by the martial nature of this knife. The wave works brilliantly. If you don't like it take it off because the knife also works brilliantly for utility/EDC purposes. 10 out of 10 for this Spydy user.

It's surprising, isn't it?

That handle looks like it would the most uncomfortable handle in normal utility grips, and yet it is far more comfortable than a lot of other so-called "utility/EDC" grade knives.

I love my P'kal. Just need to get a non-Collector's edition one so I can REALLY use it!

I am actually thinking of getting one just for the lock and then taking the wave off, and switching the clip to the other side so it sits in my pocket like a normal knife. That way it sits tip up with the blade at the back seam of your pocket. Then I could just use it as a normal knife.

This thread has really got me thinking. I like a lot of features of the P'kal, but I carry primarily for utility and the handle didn't look like it would be the most comfortable for general use. After reading threads like this and others regarding using the P'kal in a forward grip I am considering getting one. It's a little pricey for me, but I love that blade shape and am anxious to try the ball lock. Definitely a cool knife.

ive been playing with mine for the last hour, tossing it from grip to grip and opening it and closing it. i feel that this knife captures several things that i absolutely love. first the ball lock reminds me and functions very similarly to the BM axis lock. put that on a spyder with some g10 handles and im in love. but this version works even smoother and it easier to adjust to. second the wave, i have many emersons and have mastered all the waving techniques but i must say that this wave bar works absolutely flawlessly every time whether its cliped on my waistband of some mesh shorts or cliped in my front or back pocket.
another  for the pkal
thanks spyderco for constantly amazing me and putting out some wicked knives

I'd be curious to see some in hand photos of it in "normal" grips.

I also think this ball lock on the p'kal is better than the axis lock. The coiled spring isn't going to break as easily as the omega springs. I wonder though if the steel ball bearing could develope a flat spot? And would it matter?
