Spyderco P'kal

Does anyone know if the P'kal was designed for people with smaller hands? When I hold it in reverse grip edge in, thet muscle on the pinky finger side comes REAL close to the edge. Not quite to the edge(it sits a little to the side thank God), but it still seems a little close for comfort. Anyone else notice the same thing?

Also, I changed the side the clip was on. The way the Shivworks people like to carry it feels uncomfortable to me, and the tip comes a little closer to the balls than I would prefer upon opening. Anyone else do the same?

1-Muscle on the pinky finger? Huh? Your pinky is in the choil/groove, right? I have no parts of my hand near the edge.

2- Did you see the video on how the P'kal is meant to be deployed, from the front crease of the front pocket, strong side? By the time mine is waved open the tip is kinda near my solar plexus.

the size is for all types, small, middle, large and xl.
i think you hold the knife wrong ... !?
edge in your pinky finger is in the choil / groove !!!
edge out pinky finger is near the edge.
look at the shiworks hp. 2 cool vidz.
my p'kal is in the right front pocket wide right.

Crap, just erased my original message:mad:. Saw the video, holding the knife correctly(not first knife I've held this way). The Shivworks recommended draw doesn't work so good with any of my pants(different pockets affect the waved draw; some of my pants just snag the wave, making draw impossible). Different knives for different pants(an excuse to buy more!).

The muscle I'm referring to is not ON the pinky, it's on that side; it's the one you chop or hammerfist with. It's about 2mm from the edge, so I'm not getting cut, just would like it a bit further away is all.

When people screw up a normal waved draw, sometimes they stab their leg in the side/back. If you screwed up the draw from the other position, then you could stab the groin region:eek:. I know, don't screw up the draw, but shit happens(hasn't to me, but I'm not perfect, so who knows?).

Maybe my hands ARE a bit bigger than average; people whine about the BM Resistor having too large a handle, but I find it perfect. People also rave about the impact capabilities of the BM Gravitator in closed position, but the bloody thing barely extends from the bottom of my hand at all.

When held reverse grip edge out, the pinky is nowhere near the edge, as I use the OTHER groove; still plenty grippy, and the wave bar doesn't dig into my hand that way.

Still a great knife, I'd just want a bigger handle(and maybe the blade too) if I were going custom.

Even if the draw worked fine, the recommended carry position is highly uncomfortable, and since I don't get in knife-fights, comfort is a prime concern. Plus, I find I can get the blade in proper orientation just as fast with regular wave draw and a flip.

Hm.

It sounds like it might not be the right folder for you, then.

Perhaps a custom fb?

Mark Goldsworthy makes a REALLY nice handmade pikal and I'm sure he could accomdate your hand size.

Custom is probably the way to go, but my finances(university student) say otherwise. Even the P'kal was a major expenditure.

It's still a fun little knife, and should work okay. It certainly has some "cool" factor to it, and as long as I'm careful it won't cut me. No real regrets on the purchase.:)

Found one pair of jeans that the suggested P'kal carry methods works with. VERY fast deployment. If I get more pants like that, then maybe I'll switch the clip again. For now, it makes a great left pocket knife for those pants.

I somehow missed your reply earlier.

I got my stripped down Goldsworthy handmade for around the same price as what you paid for the P'kal. If you can legally carry a FB, it might not be a bad idea since he's quite flexible on sizing and his work is extremely good.

His basic pikal setup has a bit more length/safe space where your palm edge is, near the choil of the edge, too.

Sounds like something to look into in a little bit when my money supply is replentished a bit. Spent some of my money I don't have on an engagement ring(at least she said yes:thumbup:), but that delays any more knives for a couple of months.

But just wait till I win the lottery...
