Spyderco PM2 compression lock noise when unlocking the blade

Hello everyone,

I am a new member of BladeForums and I'm happy to write my first post here:)

My Spyderco ParaMilitary 2 had a sticky lock issue when I first got it. I sent it to warranty and right now it is very smooth.
Still, there is something that bugs me. When I unlock the blade, it makes a "click" sound. I should mention that I normally don't flick my knives open but when I do and then unlock the blade, there's no "click" sound. Before sending it to warranty, it had the same "issue" but only when I tried to flick it hard which needed a huge wrist motion. Now it is the exact opposite haha.

I am new to compression locks and I don't know if this sound is normal or not.

Does your Para 2 makes the same sound as mine ?

Nothing better than a video to illustrate my post.

(I apologize for the background noise. You should wear earphones and/or turn up the volume high to really hear what's going on. Trust me, in real life you can clearly hear the click sound.)

Thanks,

It is the detent ball. Open it real fast and you can't tell the difference between the lock engaging and the detent ball hitting the liner.

Spameater, I think the OP is talking about closing it, not opening.

My PM2 had this "issue" from the factory as well. The stop pin and the pivot work in tandem with one another. So you can loosen/tighten them both to different degrees until you find the sweet spot where there's: no play, blade swings freely when lock bar is depressed, and the lock doesn't click when disengaged. However, a person could drive himself crazy doing this :)

I messed with mine for a week or more before finally getting it to my liking. Mine still clicks a little, but nothing like before.

Mine is just like the video but I never noticed it until now because I always flick it open. So just pick the way you prefer and keep doing it that way.

Mine was perfect right out of the box. U get the click of the lock snapping into place when it locks the blade open which is normal. Unlocking it's as smooth as butter and as quite as a church mouse. Gotta love the PM2 its compression lock is one of my favorites along side Benchmades axis lock.

Me should read better. In that case mine sometimes sticks a little but then sometimes it doesn't. Works fine though. On second thought forget what I just said. I think you are overthinking this. Just use it.

So by your answers, some PM2s have a clicky lock and some have not. Turns out it's not a a big issue nor an issue at all. My first thought was that my compression lock was flawed, hence my post. I must admit that it is still a bit frustrating that my knife hasn't a quiet disengaging. I will surely get over it and forget that detail haha.

Thank you guys for your answers. Have a good one!

Well, it may not be completely free of making noise but to call it not "quiet" is a little off, wouldn't you think? I mean its not like someone in the next room or office is going to hear it. You would have to be right next to you and paying attention to pick up a noise like that. I get what you're saying though. However I would say every knife I have, they all make some noises doing this or that.

It's an annoyance that can definitely be fixed, not something you have to live with. As explained above, you should play around with the stop pin--loosen the screws and rotate it a bit--and adjust the pivot. You'll eventually tune it to the point where the click goes away!
