Spyderco PM2 Tanto?

There's a video of Eric talking(SHOT show) about the Tanto PM2 going through production . I'm assuming you'll see this in the next 30-45 days?!?

BladeHQ said it’s exclusive to them. Spyderco has yet to speak up about this. If they start making exclusive blade style to a dealer is Spyderco going to start making exclusive new models?
These exclusive moves are getting out of hand.

I agree about it getting out of hand......thanks for your reply

Totally agree! Love the knife but I'm not taking time off work to sit online and hope I'm lucky enough to get one! That's a major turnoff!

I love the PM2 and I sure don't need another, but I do like that Tanto. I might pick one up if they are available without too much flipper mad rush BS.

For anyone that has had a tanto, how is the sharpening process? Is it a PITA? Does the changeup in the edge at the front of the blade tend to become rounded over time?

Just sharpen it twice, first the shorter edge then the longer edge, it’s more work but you won’t ruin the secondary tip if you are being careful. I recommend always doing the secondary edge first then the primary edge, this is the best way to keep the secondary tip crisp without rounding it off. Stropping too, start with the secondary edge, then strop the primary edge like you would do with a straight razor.

3V would be quite a bit tougher, and not really lagging terribly in edge retention, imho.

This is true... While 3V is tougher than 4V, I feel we're at a point of diminishing returns of toughness and balance due to this being on a folding knife.

You may recall that a different major US knife brand recently struggled with 3V and has simply switched to M4. Meanwhile Spyderco seems to have a well executed heat treat on their 4V, with several successful runs under their belt, and more in the pipeline. I have a 4V Manix on the way and couldn't be more excited.

I'm not a metallurgy expert, however I believe that 3V struggles to hold up on the fine apex. It compromises toughness at the edge for the overall integrity of the blade... My opinion is that 3V is best on a hard use fixed blade that doesn't have the task of also being a slicer. Of course with custom heat treats anything is possible, I'm obviously discussing in the context of production runs.

I think on a folder I'd rather have M4 than I would 3V, however between M4 and 4V, I'd pick 4V.

I don't have 4V (yet). I have 3V on a custom utility fixed blade from Ed Schott I've owned for years. It's my daily jack of all trades around the house. I also have M4.

Pretty much like all the flavors, there's good in all of 'em. But I have a soft spot (no pun intended) for 3V from years of familiarity. (It sharpens up quick too, which is a plus.)

No doubt, 4V would be just fine. But then again most any steel would. I'm not too rough on my folding knives. And I have a bunch.

Honestly, I have very little use for a fortified tip on a folder. In all my years backpacking, climbing, working in law enforcement (including SRT), and generally knocking around, I've yet to break a tip except when I actually tried to test a blade. And that was with a forged (custom) 52100 blade, a steel I really like.

Anyway, I digress...

If they don't make a gazillion of these it will be a travesty.
