Spyderco PM2 Vs ZT 0560

I've got both. If you like big heavy knives, skip the PM2. I'm sorry but you will be underwhelmed as it is a super light knife compared to the big ZT. While the PM2 is an amazing knife for EDC, it's not a tank in feel/heft. The 560 for its size does carry rather slim and well. So both great options, just different ends of the spectrum in my book. Have you looked at the Military? If you like big knives, the Military dwarfs the PM2. Weight isn't much more, but size is. I love my Military.

Is there a reason you have it just to these two options? There are tons of great bigger/beefy knives out there.

I would also recommend if you are on a budget, your best money spent is to get a GOLD Membership here (like $30) and buy some like new in the box used knives. You can probably snag a lightly used 560 for about $150 if you are patient. It could also open up your options to some other HD knives you hadn't thought about. There are some really great values to be had in the Exchange.. just don't snag anything I've got my eye on :-).

As far as why I picked those two in particular, I have just always hear that the PM2 is one of the best EDC knives in the planet, for a budget of course. The reason I am looking at the 0560 however is that I am in love with Hinderers, and this is about as close as I can get to one without spending the $200 extra XD. Also, me upgrading to gold is definitely something I may do in the near future :)

I have both and love both. I would recommend the PM2 for an EDC, however....but you'll get both eventually, right ;)

I may recommend getting the 0560 first as I believe they will become harder to find as time goes on.

This seems to be the popular opinion. This may be what I end up doing. Hopefully, like some of you said, I won't be underwhelmed by the Spyderco afterwards. Also, I will be looking into some of the other knives mentioned ( Military, 0200 ) to see if those are possibilities I may consider.

I say for a Spyderco choice, the Military is the way to go.
I have a Military; love it.
Checked out a friend's Paramilitary...didn't want it.

The ZT is also very good, and works for EDC just fine. :)

For EDC I'd say PM2 all the way. For fomenting revolution or invading a small landlocked country I'd say ZT560. That's a really tough comparison, I don't think those two knives will the same niche. The PM2 is definitely a timeless EDC classic that you can't go wrong with. For opening mail, breaking down boxes, slicing food, cutting rope the PM2 is your EDC is your knife, among other great choices like the BM Grip or ZT566.

The ZT is a beast. Pictures, videos and spec sheets do not do that knife justice, it is an absolute monster. If you are a mechanic or someone that will absolutely beat the crap out of your knife everyday I'd say ZT. For me the 560 was just too big and more knife than I needed.

" Invading a Small Landlocked Country " 😂😂😂 You definitely don't make getting the ZT sound like a bad idea!

Maybe this will help...

side by side, closed

notice that the 0560 isn't grossly thicker than the PM2 - it carries very well for a large knife

Here's where the difference shows. A comment gripe among PM2 owners is the shortness of the blade relative to the scale length.

@hhmoore That is actually something I didn't expect! I never took the measurements into consideration and had never seen them side by side, and I'm pretty surprised at how similar they are in size. Beautiful scales on the PM2 by the way. Any idea if there are similar ones like that still around? Like some of the other folks have said, I am not the biggest fan of the regular G10 scales.

The scales are from Casey Lynch, as is the deep carry clip. (The 0560 came with one the PM2 does not). His username here is theoriginalspaceman. He offers the scales in hard anodized aluminum (which I chose), as well as titanium. Search his name to find them, let me know if you have a problem.

PM2 design is much more user friendly for most EDC chore while 0560 is kind of overbuilt hard use knife which will be redundant 90% of time.

0560 has higher cool factor though.

Apples and oranges. The PM is in a different weight class. If you want a more comparable ZT look at the 770 (the aluminum one can be had for the same price as a PM2), the 450, the 350, or the 566. The 560 is a large tank of a folder, the PM is more a "just enough" knife, big enough to give you all the blade a folder will need, stout enough to take what you should use a folder for. Having owned all of what I mentioned except the 450 (I will eventually!) I can say the similarities in order of closest to furthest away would be 770, 566, 450 (the 350 is far more stout than the PM), 350, then about a mile down the road is the 560.

They are actually quite different in size if you take another look at the pictures. The cutting edge difference is about 0.7". Nonetheless, I agree with other posters: they are apples and oranges. Possessing one will not satisfy your desire for the other. I'd say it is the right time to get a 560. You can get one in good/great condition from the Exchange at the $140-$180 range if you are not looking for a collector piece.

Something to consider, from personal experience. I wanted a pm2 as a replacement for my 0350 that was tearing up my pocket. Ended up with a 0560 instead. Since that time I have bought a 0562cf and an Xm-18, still don't have a pm2. (It's still on the list) :). There is just something about Ricks eye for design that I definitely find appealing.

Umm, I guess that depends on who THE Willie Baugh is. XD, as far as I know, I am indeed THE Willie Baugh.

Hahahahhaa I got my consonants mixed up and brain farted. I was thinking Billy Waugh. And if you don't know who he is, I highly recommend looking into him and his history.

Wow! I honestly did not know that was a person! I wasn't trying to be smart or anything XD. My name is William Baughman, and I just combine them and use that as most of my usernames. Thank you for pointing that out to me though! I am honestly surprised I have never found out about him until now!

Well, I meant that they were closer in size than I originally thought they were. And as far as them being two different knives, I am well aware. The original reason for this post wasn't exactly which one is better for what, but rather considering my financial situation and the rarity of the two, what would be the best course of action in buying them. I wasn't too concerned as to which was more useful for what situation really, just if I should get one before the other and what not, and as I have found out and didn't know, the 0560 is discontinued and will be a little harder to get ahold of in the near future

I have both and the PM2 is a way better EDC: Size, weight, and price considered. Despite the size similarities in the pictures, the 0560 is twice the knife in hand and in pocket. I'm one of the few that doesn't love the PM2 in the way that everyone else seems to, and am much more a Manix2 guy FWIW.

Update: I saw a good deal on the exchange for a PM2 and I decided to get it. It arrived today and I can say I am definitely not disappointed. It is a huge step up from my Tenacious. The jimping is incredible, and I finally have a decent sized lanyard hole. Now, I just got to save up for the 0560. Thanks again to everyone for the insight! I think this is going to be the beginning of a long and expensive hobbie.

Congratulations! The PM2 is definitely a modern classic EDC for a solid reason.
