Hello all, this is my first post on the Spyderco forum and I'm hoping somebody can advise me.
It concerns a full metal Spyderco Police with full serated blade.
The lockup has become so extremely loose that there is a lot of vertical blade play and when one grips the metal handle a little bit to tight the blade will close by itself because the lock is extremely weak.
I have no clue about Spyderco's garantuee although it probably won't be lifelong as Chris Reeve has. I will have to send the knife from The Netherlands (Europe) to the USA so I have to be shure they can fix it before I spend hard $ on shipping.
Is this commen to happen after a few years of normal use ( not flipping it open with great force/speed) the blade is still sharp and side to side play is almost non existant.
I'm doing this on behalf of a friend.
Best regards, Bagheera

I've had my police for going on 13 years. I've opened it a million times in every imaginable way and never had a problem with positive lock-up. On the other hand one of the guys on the fire department here has a police that's less than a year old that I can close one-handed without using the lock bar. I should mention here that the firefighter's knife is the only Spyderco I've ever seen with a lock problem. (Or any problem for that matter.)

Send it back. Spyderco has always been great about warranty stuff. A knife with a defective lock is dangerous.

For sure, you should contact Spyderco Customer Service on 1-800-621-1065. They do not want you to have that kind of problem.

Bagheera - It sounds like the lock spring slipped. unusual, but has on accassion happened. You can probably replace it with out Distributor in Holland and we can fetch it from him when we go to the IWA Show, or you can send it to us in Golden. Your call. Either way, John is right, not safe to use a knife with a questionable lock.

Sal, I also have a ss handle police that has play on lockup. It hasn't failed me yet but when I flick it open by holding the thumb hole and flicking the handle out it strikes the lock and bounces causing it to immediately unlock. I don't think the stress is extreme, as I don't flick it hard, I was led to believe that this was an acceptable way of opening the knife. Is this right? Apart from this I love the knife but am concerned that the play will only get worse. This is the only Spyderco I own that has any blade play. Should I return the knife for repair?

Thanks Sal and al the others for replying, I just received an email from Spyderco's customer/warenty service department also and I must say I'm 200% happy with the quick answers of both Spyderco and you Sal.
Thanks again and I'm now sure that my problem will get solved.
best regards,
Bagheera

Joh - sounds unusual. Handle drops shouldn't affect lock up. Check for dirt in the lock notch. Might want to let us look at it?

Sal, the lock is clear of lint or dirt, I clean it regularly. It doesn't happen all the time but is a bit scary when it does happen, closed on my fingers once.
I don't know if this will effect warranty service but I have bead blasted the handle to give a better grip. (Found the polished SS to be very slippery)
It is really the play in the blade at lock up that concerns me, is it likely to get worse?

Joh - Logic would dictate that it probably won't improve by itself. I would send it in.
