Spyderco Police or Benchmade AFCK

I would go with the AFCK D2 steel. Once you hold it you'll love it! The finger notch is added safety. Just pick one up and you'll be hooked!!!!

:D Thank you for all the input. I had to leave for a while but have returned. I just purchased the SOG Pentagon Elite 3.9 inch for a replacement EDC. We will see how it does.

Both are excellent knives, but given the choice I'd go with a knife I can take apart, the AFCK is one of my current EDC's and has been for the last 10 yrs.

This knife is well balanced and the older ATS 34 takes and holds a wicked sharp edge.

Consider the AFCK's cousin, the 805 TSEK AXIS.

I have both the TSEK and a G-10 Police. They are somewhat similar, as the TSEK blade shape is more like the Police than the AFCK. Plus the 805 does not have that nasty coating.

My G-10 police is currently used for an EDC. It is slim and light in weight, therefore does not feel like a big-honkin-knife in my pocket. However, given it has a single liner, it _may_ not have the same structural strength as the Benchmade 805/806. The stainless Police should not present this concern.

After trying an 805 TSEK, I settled on that as a duty knife. It presents itself as a fairly heavy-duty tool. The blade profile has a fairly thick tip, more of a utility blade than a fighter. The new models allow you to position the clip for tip-up or down carry, left or right hand. I placed the clip in tip down carry, as that is what I became familiar with all my Spydies. The TSEK does have thumbstuds, which some seem to prefer, others prefer the hole - I am ambivalent.

Although it would officially void the warranty, the AXIS knives can be dissassembled for cleaning, which is useful if the tool ever gets in some bio-nasty stuff - a real possibility (I started another thread sometime ago that turned into a bit of a row on this subject. For they type of stuff public servants can get into, I appreciate the ability to get into a tool and properly clean it). The Police is riveted, making dissassebly impractical - the one disadvantage to the Police - I still carry Spydies in regular clothes however.

One final bonus, the TSEK is somewhat less expensive than the AFCK.

Despite that the two models in question have opening holes, the Police model opens up way easier, due to the slimness at the scales where they meet the area that you thumb open.

Couldn't you toss it in an autoclave?

The SS Police has alot going for it:

1) Virtually indestructable steel handle.
2) Slightly longer blade than the AFCK.
3) Safe and secure lock-back design. And there are no omega-springs that could break.
4) And the rivited construction is a plus in my book--while it's true that you can disassemble a screw-constructed knife, the downside is that a screw can come loose.
And according to Murphy's Law, that screw will come loose at the worse time possible and when you don't have the tool to tighten it at hand.
I have a Spyderco Vesuvius that is missing a screw. I don't know where or when it fell out, but it's gone now.

Good luck,
Allen.
