Spyderco Police: VG-10 or K390?

So, how much maintenance is the K390 going to be?

You will need to wipe and oil it after every use if you do not want a patina on it. If you do not mind patina, then just the wipe after every use.

Sharpening wise, you will need to buy CBN/Diamond rods for the sharpmaker for best sharpening experience. With standard ceramics it will be a chore (if not impossible) if you somehow nick the edge even slightest. However, if you are careful with edge, a few pass on fine ceramics after every use will do the trick.

If you set your heart on K390 and do not expect to deal with organic materials to often (like stabbing people) go for it, but as a secret agent and mystical ninja, if you need to stab someone frequently, then go with VG 10 :)

I picked up a K390 Endura about a month ago.

Edge holding is good, but I think the average person would be happy with VG10 as well.

I'd look at it more as a carbon vs stainless question.

For the duties described, get the SS serrated version. Heavier, can stop throwing stars, as it has solid steel scales, and is easier to disinfect when one has to get all stabby mcstabberson. Plus the original blade shape looks so much better.

Or wait for the SE K390 to drop.

This is my endura kc exclusive.
I carry this knife alot !! It's the best option imo.

I decided on the VG-10. The knife just arrived. I put a few notes here.

Stainless will be good on a user knife that I intend to carry. Also, VG-10 has been around, it's a Japanese steel, and Japan and VG-10 have a history with Spyderco. Lastly, I want to learn about all the steels, so I'll start with VG-10, and get to K390 and the others with time.

Thanks for all of your input. It was valuable to me. :)

Congratulations on finally stepping up to the plate!
VG10? K390? The only correct answer is "Yes!"
Nobody ever said you couldn't have more than one

Congratulations. Spyderco VG-10 is pretty easy to polish, and seems to resist chipping pretty well. I've used an Endura on materials that stretch the boundaries on acceptable knife use and it performed past my expectations.

I also used to carry a Delica clipped to the inside waist of my surf shorts when shoreline fishing in the Pacific. After a while, it developed rust spots and some stains, but cleaned up well enough with some Flitz.

Saying that, I am liking how K390 looks on paper, and what I'm seeing others here on the Forum are reporting.

It's actually pretty cool that Spyderco is offering this super steel in an affordable package.

They do seem to take ease of carry to the next level: don't they?
On the polar end of the spectrum: I've got a Para 3, and a Military model on the way also.

The Police 4 is one of my absolute favourite Spydies. I know the decision is already made and VG-10 is a fine steel, but my K390 version cuts and cuts and cuts.

Both are great knives I'm sure but I think a 4.3" blade in K390 for that price is really something. Maybe there is room in the collection for both...?

Enjoy the new knife!

My GF just gifted me a SS Police full serrated... an inonic model for sure! Kinda heavy but so slim that it dissapears in the pocket.
