Spyderco price increase

Hi Magtrucks,

Welcome to our forum.

As Chopper mentioned, The price increase was the result of our bad estimation of what it would costs to machine the G-10 scales. Once in production, we learned that they cost much more to make than planned.

See lieferung lieferung post below. It is the fact that they are exclusives/sprint runs that makes them sold out quickly and highly sought in the secondary market. It is also part of the reason that makes Spyderco so much of interest to customer. It would be foolish for the company to throw away dealer exclusives and limited runs.

People are complaining the high retail price of Shaman at $190+ (and I don't disagree with them). Imagine how fast it would be sold out if it were a limited run.

I agree with you. I'd like to see Spyderco also drop some of the odd ball/funky designs that they have. They're quirky, and just odd. The other thing that bugs me about Spyderco is their limited editions. If it's a good knife/steel combo, put it in regular production. By having all of these exclusive offerings, all they're doing is jacking up the price of said knives on the secondary market. When you have a run of 1000 knives and they sell out in 2 minutes, how is that serving your customer base? Yes, the guys who want them will stay up till midnight and buy right when the clock strikes 12:00, but you shouldn't have to do that to buy a knife.

I'm rambling a bit, but Spyderco has kind of turned me off the last year or so. I've been carrying my ZTs and my old Buck knives as of late.

Part of why those sell out in minutes is the fact that they're exclusives and limited. There's no guarantee they will if they were standard catalog models. It is also probably not cost efficient to add those steels to regular production but to instead create limited batches.

Spyderco has lots of designs I'm not too keen on, but that doesn't mean someone else won't like them and also many of their oddballs are quite functional. Even though the price increase is going to hold me back a bit, I'll always be a fan because of the round hole (my favorite method and I think aesthetically pleasing) and the quality of their mass produced knives. My ZT0450 for example was not razor sharp NIB; I've never had a Spyderco that wasn't.

Shaman should be in micarta for that price. Also micarta which isn't very expensive is more friendly material to machine and it's looks better finished like that than glass epoxide which is better with grippy texture or 3d machining. Or just make Shaman 2 in cheaper version with scales like PM2.

Last year, I bought over 30 Spyderco knives.

So far, this year, I have not bought one single Spyderco knife. In fact, I am only planning on buying one all year.

I have bought 14 other brand knives this year.

I just ordered three spyderco all three have been discontinued. my opinion we are going to see some popular models discontinued. Reason MAP Sage 2 and the Caly 3.5 RIP

Hell, there’s no guarantee they’ll sell out even if they’re exclusives or sprints. The last Worker sprint stuck around until it was clearance priced at most places, and I was surprised the Urban K390 stuck around as long as it did.

Looking through various sites, it seems like the Shaman was hardest hit when it comes to price increases. Everything went up a few bucks, but that definitely seemed like the model that experienced the biggest jump.

(Never mind. The previous poster just answered why that was)

It’s funny, but I’ve tried branching out to other brands these last few months, and I always come back to Spyderco. It’s not that the other knives weren’t well made, it’s just that every other method of opening a knife seems inconvenient after using the Spyderhole for so long.

The Worker is still around..they are in stock at KW and NK..another dealer is showing 45 of those still in stock..good price too.

The Techno will be done soon when the Techno 2 drops sometime this year. I hope people don’t gouge for Techno’s like the way The Bowie is now that it has been discontinued. I suspect a Bowie 2 is in the works that will be better than the first

I will continue to buy exclusively Spyderco. I have yet to find another knife company that offers what Spyderco offers - all the different models, blade steels, exclusives, etc. As far as "low end"? Maybe the Tenacious and Byrd lines which I don't own, but the FRN models - Endura, Delica, and Stretch to name a few? Nothing low end about them. I get on a Stretch or Endura kick and end up carrying one for months. They are just great knives - along with the Para, Military, Manix, etc. Just purchased a Delica for my daughter who works at the local grocery store - she is the envy of all the box boys. Uses the crap out of it - I need to sharpen it already. Or I need to get her one in ZDP189. As far as the off the wall/unusual models? There are some that I cannot get too excited about, but my serrated Ayoob? Probably the one knife that I pick up out of the box the most. Or maybe the Nilakka, or the Yojimbo 1, or the Lionspy, the T-Mag, Rock lobster, the Lil Temps etc. I don't like every single model they come out with - the Shamen - can't get too excited about that, so I'm not going to buy it. The exclusives have at times pissed me off. I'd still love to have a 390 para, but I'm not going to pay the aftermarket price and I don't have the time to set by the computer when the sprints come up for sale, so I get what I can. As far as pricing? Look around - everything is going up. I sell rebar for a living - a piece of #4 20' used to go for 4.25 a stick 4-5 months ago - I'm up to 6.25 right now with pricing continuing to escalate. Wages are going up - I hate to imagine what Sal pays out in salaries in Colorado - cost of living out there isn't cheap. I cannot imagine that the companies that Sal contracts with overseas are going to set still while their costs are going up without renegotiating. The long and the short of it is, Spyderco is supposed to make a profit, so they can continue to do what they do and when it comes down to it, if I can't afford it, or I think they are asking too much for a certain model, I don't buy it. I still think that Spyderco is the best deal going in the knife game regardless of where the MAP has gone.

A few comments, though I’m a bit late to the party (which happens frequently).

Having the bravado to continually put out a few unusual knives that knowingly won’t top the charts is one of the things that makes Spyderco what it is. I’m sure that some models have sold better than expected, and some worse. I’m glad they do it and so long as it doesn’t unreasonably drive up prices across the line, I certainly hope it continues. The whole hobby would be less fun if there weren't a few oddball or niche Spydies floating around.

The “worker” models are the core of the brand. Native 5, Manix 2, PM 2, Millie. I guess the USA models more or less fill the mid-range. They are fantastic. Spyderco has proven they can do midtec quality stuff too—it’s usually fantastic as well! However, lots of folks are doing production midtec quality stuff now. NO ONE matches Spyderco in the niche occupied by the USA models. Concentrating on one extreme of the line or the other doesn’t make sense to me, as the middle of their line kills it.

Sprints and exclusives keep brand energy high for knife enthusiasts, which seems like smart marketing.

I don’t think appealing design will be a challenge for Sal & Co. Controlling cost certainly will be. I wish Spyderco success in that endeavor. I hope the rest of us can keep pace with inflation to some degree, so that we can continue supporting Spyderco, even if we have to be more selective.

I´m considering Shaman for months...then I note the price increase, That´s petty because for the actual price became proibitive for me.
