Spyderco pricing over time

Yes, it has everything to do with dollar to Yen conversion, the new tooling cost requid to make the knife, and the fact that the maker of that model is expensive.
I just think the southard flipper gives you much more value for the money even though it's more expensive. It makes me sad because I want a starmate but cant justify it. I plan on picking up a southard when work picks up though.

Funny you mention e justification angle. More often than not, people will have a puzzled look on their face when I tell them how much the Delica I use costs. To a lot of people $55 on a knife is absolutely unheard of, steel is steel no matter what the letters and numbers indicate, and a $10 knife cuts just as well as a $200 knife. Having just received my VG10 Starmate about a week ago, I do think it is priced in accordance to the fit and finish. There is a reason that maker charges what he does. Is it perfect? No, but if I want almost perfect I carry the Sebenza.

The justification that I was mentioning in my original post stems from the fact that I usually separate my knives between custom/semi-custom and production knives. I like to carry my production knives when I am camping, hunting, fishing, or participating in activities where I have an increased chance of losing things. While I don't often lose my knives, I can afford (both financially and psychologically) to lose a production knife up to the $150 range. Once I get over $200 I'm not likely to carry a knife in my outdoor pursuits, and when I'm in town I'll carry my high-end customs/semi-customs.

I don't have to justify my purchase to anyone but me.

Spydercos have tended to bottom out around 60% of MSRP the few years I've been buying them, though I noticed a couple dealers drop down to 55% this year. They don't drop lower as they've been on the market longer from what I've seen. If anything, they go up. Gayle Bradleys were available around $120 lots of places when they first came out (paid $99 shipped for mine with a $20 coupon deal), and now it's hard to find them under $135-140.

May I please ask where I could get those types of discounts? Do you have to be "on the inside" or anyone can obtain that type of % off MSRP?
Thank you kindly for your help,
Naz

Spyderco knives have very high popularity right now, even the older and more mundane models like the Delica. Dealers are having trouble keeping the more popular models in stock such as the Paramilitary 2, and this popularity gradually extends to other Spyderco models. The reference was made to the ZT 0560 and that was a popular knife at first. It is a great knife but I think a lot of people decided it was too big for them and a lot of them ended up going on the secondary market which affects pricing of new ones as well. If you can buy a like new used 0560 for significantly less than the new price, then you will wait and buy the used one. Compare this to Spyderco- new Paramilitary 2's are difficult to find so people can sell used ones for at or above what the pricing would be for new ones if they were more available.
