Spyderco problem

Thank you for clarifying that. I wasn't certain. But if these clips are metal, than what Spydie models are plastic? Are the new, VG-10 Endura FRN plastic clips? I know the original poster complained that his Endura was the plastic clip which broke. I have seen one of these FRN Enduras and the clip seemed like the same clip on the Calypso Jr. and the CF Police. I'm confused.

Which are plastic, and which are metal/steel? I don't consider the FRN clips to be plastic, but maybe that is what he is referring to ( the integral clips). I would have a hard time believing that these clips can break off. They seem pretty tough. I always thought the "plastic" clips were screw-in clips, and that they were the cheap, black screw-in clips like I mentioned on the Calypso and Police.

The only new Spyderco models that have plastic clips are the Pro-grip, the Catcherman, and the Spydersaw. Any other models that have clips, have metal ones. The Endura that JeffG broke the clip off of was probably one of the original Enduras with the integral plastic clips. The clips on the Calypso Jr. and the CF Police are metal clips that have a coating on them. If you carry one long enough, the coating will eventually rub off and you can see the metal underneath. Some spyder-holics have even sanded off the coating and then polished their clips. (I did this on one of my Delicas)

i had a "clip" problem with a SOG knife. i called SOG's customer support, they mailed the parts i needed to fix the clip(new screws and clip)at NO charge and it was here in 3 days. i did not have to send it in(saved shipping and insurance charges), they did not have to ship it back(saved shipping and insurance charges)and i had my knife fixed in 3 days(i did not have to wait a couple of weeks for it to be shipped back and fourth). i feel capable enough to sharpen and clean my own knives. SOG will get LOTS of future business from me. i like being treated as an adult, trusted that i am perfectly capable to use a screwdriver and make the repair myself- WITHOUT getting a hassle and the mandatory WAITING/paying shipping game.
i realize there are a lot of "dolts" out there, but give the guy the benifit of the doubt that he can use a swrewdriver to replace the clip, gee..., he is not performing surgery...
just my .02

waynejitsu: the problem was that it was an integral FRN clip that broke, which one have to grind that away, possibly machine a hole to put the metal clip and the barrel looking screw in order to attach the clip. It's not like it's just a straight clip and screw replacement, it does take some tools to do it.
I wouldn't think Spyderco would ship some power tools for us to grind those integral clips away to put the clips, would they? ;)

sorry, i guess i just "assumed" most people, men anyhow, had a "collection" of hand and power tools. guess it is just in my blood:)
i realize now, there must be a lot of folks that are not as capable working with their hands.
thanks for the added thoughts:)

I have a good collection of powertools, but I wouldn't attempt it. First you have to drill the holes precisely where they need to be - something I would be hesitant to try even with my drill press. Second, you need the taps to thread the holes to fit the screwws supplied - probably harder than the drilling.

The bottom line though is, if I screw up (no pun intented) my knife is screwed up. If Spyderco screws up (much less likely) I'm sure they wouldn't just send the screwed up knife back to you. $10 seem like a small price to pay for the "insurance"

i guess i just never found it difficult to drill a hole, tap it and put in a few screws;)
has the world "really" become that helpless?
no flame intended. it just surprises me that something as simple as drilling/tapping has been made to sound like a big deal?
i wonder why SOG thought i could drill a hole and install a screw all by myself? they even sent an extra screw, "just in case" :D

Yeah, most of us are "helpless" because we do not own a drill press.

Maybe I'm wrong, but replacing the clip on your SOG did not require heavy modification of the knife. Or the extensive use of power tools. IMHO, I don't think it is comparable in any way.

Even if you had the required equipment and experience, drilling a large hole in the handle of a FRN knife is not all that easy. A few 1/100ths of an inch off, and you have a weakened handle that could easily snap during use.

I can't imagine that ANY company would be willing to risk a seriously injured customer and a massive lawsuit just to save a few dollars.

Probably more than 98% of Spyderco's customers don't have experience drilling and tapping FRN. And, out of the few that have the equipment and experience, I would be willing to bet that only a handful of them have access to Spyderco-level test equipment to make sure they did a satisfactory job.

For $10 + shipping, you get a knife that is fixed, refurbished, and tested. It seems like a steal to me.

Just my $.02.

waynejitsu: Not everyone has machinist skills. I could do the job myself, but I'd rather pay Spyderco the $10 to do it exactly right. They do this stuff everyday.

Just curious... Do you do all your own auto work? Did you build your own house? Do you grow or hunt all your own food? Raise livestock? Sew all your clothes? Do your own dental work?

I'm willing to bet there are a few areas in which you are a little more "helpless" than others and in which some of the folks here can outshine you as far as working with their hands. I'm not trying to flame either, but I just wanted to point out that a couple of your comments came off as arrogant.

sorry, i did not mean to come off as arrogant, it was not intended that way, and i apologize for coming off that way:)
i have a lot of experience at machining, auto work, body work, fabrication, etc., so to me it was no big deal. i realize after several posts that everyone does not have the same skills and may excell in other areas.

my wife and i have a lot of experience, and between the two, i can say yes to everything but dental. she was raised on a ranch and has a degree in computor programing(not PC's..., mainframes).
my dad was an army ranger, became a mechanic when he retired and i learned a lot of "cool stuff".

...everything but dental, i can't get my hands on novacaine, LOL!
i also know NOTHING medical, it makes my stomach weak... :)
so yes, i do have weak points, i am sure lots of them, like coming off wrong in my posts...,
again, please accept my apology:)
