Spyderco Red PM2 Craze = Tulip Mania?

yep...somewhat. i dont like red g10 so super steel or not i have zero interest in one. red makes me think training knife from the older days. the flippers went real crazy when first released.

Are the people who are buying them "crazy," in your opinion?

And how is that one specific knife any different than any other LE?

yep. they are. no flipper can flip unless there is buyer folks with more money than sense willing to pay.

red g10 on this one and m390..if i remember correctly? plus was sold at a very competitive price point so higher flipper return....than the bentoboxes etc.

I don't think the craze is for the red as much as it is for the M390. I'm guessing a lot of the buyers either don't care about the color, or will do a scale swap if they don't like it. The blue M390 PM2 from BBS has similar prices.

I think a lot of people don't like S30V as it's prone to chipping, and Spyderco hasn't released that many supersteel variants of the PM2, so the ones that are out there are in high demand.

I didnt jump on the multi colored PM2 bandwagon (the couple I bought are standard black G10) but suppose its a question of supply and demand ... then again that was the case of the Tulip Craze.

Maybe in the future the frenetic gobbling up of marked up PM2s will seem as crazy, as the tulip debacle does to us.

I agree that flippers cannot flip without customers, but many members here have bought that knife at the "flipper" rate. Maybe you or the OP would not pay that price, but that hardly makes them crazy or crazier than anybody else here.

It's all "worth." If something is worth it to person X and not worth it to person Y, that doesn't mean person X is "crazy."

The vast majority of the earths population thinks its "crazy" to spend $20 on a knife.

And I don't see how this specific example is any different than any other example that is "flipped" or sold above MRSP. It's all the same thing.

I didn't read where the OP called buyers crazy. I did read that he subjectively thinks the price is crazy, and that is his opinion. I think whether the price is "crazy" or not will be determined by market forces. If the sells don't keep up they will lower price, just as was done with 940-1501.

I agree with tyyreaun about the steel being the driving force on this one. Personally, I liked the Bento Box blue more than the red but either way you'd be getting a great knife with an amazing steel.

M390 is the favorite steel of many people, the PM2 is a favorite knife of many people too so there's a huge market for that particular combination. Another reason I think the DLT exclusive sold so well is because it's starting price was much lower than the BBS exclusive.

I haven't seen the most recent prices of them and all I have seen are higher than I would pay but I don't seem them reaching heights that are uncommon or strange for an equivalent product being flipped.

It is hard to say if the prices are off since 1) all the sellers wash the asking prices out of the ads and 2) we don't know the actual price the item sold for.

The DLT Red/M390 was a great deal when they were selling it new.

Personally it's more reminiscent of the "Kipper und Wipper"episode in 1619 but YMMV.

*shrug* I don't like flippers for anything, but as stated before, it sells for whatever people are willing to pay for something. I don't care much for the red G10 and I don't love M390 enough to pay prices in that region. A blue M390 for regular sprint prices however I'd buy.

The PM2 arguably has had the most "super steel" options out of any Spyderco model thus far since it's very popular : S90V , S110V , Cruwear , M4 , M390 , 204P , 52100 , S30V , S35VN. That's just off the top. The Military has had quite a few too.

I think the craze was an appealing combo of the M390 (one of my personal favorites) , red G10 (which is rare among factory Spydercos) and a great price point. Price was even lower if you bought two or more. Smart move.

And personally , I don't find S30V chipping at all. Maybe I'm lucky. And Spyderco seems to like it too since it's on @ 90% of their knives.

But you can get a PM2 in S110V for around $165 (or is it $155?) and that steel is at least as desirable as M390!

For the people who haven't been tracking the prices, the red PM2's are going for north of $200. You can get a brand new (from one of the trusted online retailers) blurple S110V model for around $165.
