Spyderco Red PM2 Craze = Tulip Mania?

There's always someone who's "gotta have it". I really dig the red G-10 (would look sweet with a black clip) you don't see it on a whole lot of Spydercos, but I'm not crazy about super steels or the price.

But you can get a PM2 in S110V for around $165 (or is it $155?) and that steel is at least as desirable as M390!

I think the contrary. I feel m390 is the more desirable. It has edge retention that approaches s90 and s110, while maintaining more toughness and corrosion resistance. My m390 and 20cv hold a fine, arm hair shaving edge longer than my s90. I think for most intents and purposes that the m390 will hold a better edge than the s90/s110 due to its incredible edge stability. As far as holding a utility edge longest, then the s90/110 probably have m390 beat. But at least for my edc use, which i think is typical, the extra wear resistance of s90/110 will not be realized. Many of us would touch up the s90/110 before it could show its wear resistance advantage.

I just want the red grips. I could care less about the steel.

wish they made the red in cheaper steel.

I like the red G-10 much more than the Blurple. Premium steel. I don't think the market prices are surprising.

Sure. If they sell (they will), they are neither over- nor crazily-priced.

But that is always true.
Totally agree.
I bought one of the red pm2 s purely for the opportunity to get an m390 pm2 at a relatively reasonable price. Don t know about the heat treatment, but the blade stays extremely sharp despite some extensive heavy use. Seems to maintain an edge better than my cts 204p pm2. Might just be the one knife.
And, I m getting used to the red handle.

Why don't you just take off the scales and dye them in RIT? Isn't that how the pros that sell those modified Delicas do it? Then again, that's FRN...

You know what? I was just about to do that with my 2 yellow salt knives. But they are FRN , like you said, and not G10.

The PM2 arguably has had the most "super steel" options out of any Spyderco model thus far since it's very popular : S90V , S110V , Cruwear , M4 , M390 , 204P , 52100 , S30V , S35VN. That's just off the top. The Military has had quite a few too.

Lots of options, sure, but break them down.

S110V is readily available, but a lot of people consider M390 better (higher toughness, easier to sharpen, better edge retention in some findings, such as on the Cedric and Ada channel). S90V was a sprint run, and isn't as good as S110V, anyway.

Cruwear, M4, and 52100 are all carbon steels, which not everyone wants, and aren't readily available anyway. Of these, I'd say M4 is the most desirable, and the M4 PM2s have highly inflated prices, too.

I've never even seen the 204P for sale, but I'm sure it'd also fetch a high price.

If you want the best possible stainless PM2, you pretty much need to get the M390 or 204P versions, all of which were limited runs and hence fetch high prices.

I disagree, and I think a lot of other people would, as well. S110V is both less tough and harder to sharpen - I had problems with Spyderco S110V chipping when sharpening on a KME. Moreover, a lot of tests show the M390 family has better edge retention. See the Cedric and Ada tests - he found that Spyderco's 204P beat Spyderco's S110V.

You can only dye darker, so you'd have to start with the natural or jade g10 option... which is just as or almost as expensive and still a gamble. Sometimes colors don't come out quite right or are uneven. You're better off just buying them with the red scales already or looking for aftermarket scales.

This happens almost every time there's an LE PM2. It sells out quickly, resellers push price up over $200, eventually the few people who're willing to pay the elevated price satisfy their collection and prices fall back down to where they'll settle. The landing spot is different for each model, but it's generally closer to where the retail price was to begin with.

Buy a Rat 1 in tan.. Dye the handles.. BOOM.. And ya got money left over for beer/BBQ...:D John

I wanted the M390 and paid just over $200 in the exchange. Beat the price of the blue M390 available from other retailers online. That said its pretty crazy to seeing people asking for $250+ but folks will sell if they have others willing to pay. I much prefer the M390 over S110v.

I don't think that spyderco's S30V steel is to bad. I use to not like it till I tried spyderco's. I have a Ti millie in S30V and it cuts real well and holds a edge for a long time to.

Break them down anyway ya like. It doesn't change the fact that the PM2 has been made available in quite a few super steels. Boom.
