Spyderco Reveal 12 - 2023

I'm not a diehard Spyderco guy, but Spyderco definitely wins the competition of best 2023 unveiling so far. Those clever bastards just know how to make a fantastic work knife in the steels and heat treatments we want. I hope they make a lot of the 15v sprint run models.

so they added 15v and skipped over magnacut??
weird, I thought they were more intune

honestly I'm not interested 15v - only 8 ft-lbs of toughness... chippy at best (imho)

Yeah, when I duct tape my folder to a stick and chop down trees I need a lot more impact toughness.
In a hard use / survival scenario , I'm more concerned about breaking my blade than dulling .

Otherwise best save my duck tape for mending my useless busted knife .

I can sharpen a dull knife but can't fix a broken blade .

Good to hear, as I can't seem to land a 15v Manix to save my life. I have a PM2 in Maxamet, so a 15v PM2 would make for some fun side-by-side testing.

I'm in for a Military 2! I really wish those counter puppies and the like were vg10.

Honestly, I'd have preferred BD1N. I have a bunch of the Spyderco Z-Cut knives in BD1N and they are great for what they are. They also cost less than these counter puppies...

The use of 7Cr17Mov is a real head-scratcher here, especially given the price tag. The day before this drop, I had been commenting that the Bow River was questionable with 8Cr13Mov at $46, and then they drop these in 7Cr17Mov at $38. 🤦‍♂️

I get it if they wanted to go a more stainless route than 8Cr13Mov with kitchen knives. A decade or more ago, dropping down to 7Cr17Mov would have been a reasonable way to do it. I seem to recall 7Cr17Mov being a popular choice in budget survival and outdoors knives back then too. Unfortunately, it's 2023 and 7Cr is just too far behind the curve.

The only one I care about is the mili 2. I’ve loved the 1 for years and can’t wait to get the 2nd option, although the OG mili will no doubt still be one of the best for gloved use.

I don't have any experience with bd1n but I'd be interested in trying it. I have a VG10 "Bowie Chef" and absolutely love it. It is pretty much the only kitchen knofe I use with the exception of a spyderco kapara.

I'm more concerned with using knives for actual cutting or surviving than purposely breaking them.

A cold chisel cost five bucks at the hardware store so raw durability is nothing special imho.

Is there a particular task do you think the 15v cannot do?

Also keep in mind it is a folding knife, it would not be difficult to make a purpose built 15v cold chisel for pure durability reasons but then the cutting ability goes down the drain and it stops being a knife.

You may be surprised to see what something like this steel can do especially if you increase the edge angle to suit your purposes.

Wonder if the Military 2 will actually hit store shelves in 2023…..Funny that it won Blade Show 2022 American made knife of the year and wasn’t even available for purchase.

I’m in for one when they are available but not holding my breath on it….same with the Manix 2 LW with the torx screws.
Isn't the idea with the reveals supposed to be that the knives shown will be released in the coming quarter? Maybe I'm misremembering, though.

I was really hoping for some Magnacut.

BD1N is a decent and apparently underrated steel. It has excellent corrosion resistance. While VG-10 has better edge retention in theory, testing suggests that Spyderco does a better heat treatment on their folders in BD1N. I don't know what kind of heat treatment they do on their kitchen knives but aside from a little stropping, my Z-Cuts are still on their factory edges. Of course, they only get used a few times per week and only on food over a cutting board. 🤷‍♂️

Just having looked it up, Z-Cuts are still available in a few different configurations with a street price of like $23. That makes the 7Cr17Mov at $38 feel extra ridiculous. 🤦‍♂️

If you're looking to try BD1N, the Manix 2, Para 3, and a few other folders are offered in it, as well as their more expensive Murray Carter kitchen knives.

the only 'use case' for 15v... is if you have to break down hundreds of cardboard boxes daily

so the only option they have with magnacut is fully serrated? .... sigh
is it really too much to ask for one plain edge?

plain edge?
The Native Salt is a dynamic fusion of the best-selling Native 5 Lightweight platform and the extraordinary corrosion-resistant qualities of a nitrogen-based blade steel. The defining feature of this knife is its full-flat-ground CPM MagnaCut blade, which is available with either a PlainEdge™ or SpyderEdge™ cutting edge and features an index-finger choil that allows the option of a forward, “choked up” grip for enhanced control.

Above is from Spyderco : "available with either PlainEdge or..." .:thumbsup:

Supposed to be anyway "available" , can pre-order : https://www.knifecenter.com/item/SP...magnacut-satin-plain-blade-yellow-frn-handles

With 15V and Magnacut offerings, this reveal is blowing my skirt up!

Very cool about the Military2. I don't know what it's been lately but I've been liking blades lengths on the smaller end. The Lil' Temperance 3 has my attention. Looks like a great little user.

I'm not sure I agree with the concern over the toughness of 15V. Per Larrin's data, 65+ HRC 15V is capable of similar toughness as M390/20CV at 62 HRC. While M390 isn't a tough steel, it seems to still work fine in larger knives without significant risk of failure.

That's before you even consider the advantage in strength/stability that the harder 15V provides.

I must admit, nothing in the reveal is of interest to me. I like that the military is finally getting a four position clip, but I generally don't like knives that large. My Biryukov at 3.8" is my max.
