Spyderco Roadie?

I had one when they first came out. It was a neat little knife but I felt the detent was weak and I actually felt like the blade might accidentally deploy in my pocket so I let it go.

You must have never owned a Bradley Air nor Sage 3, etc.
The Roadie detent is like a mouse trap compared to those.

No doubt about the GB Air. Good to know about the Roadie because I plan to include one with my next order.

My girlfriend gave me one for Christmas. I like it. What Sal said is pretty on the dot. Super people friendly, super easy to carry. Pretty unique.

Sal,

Any chance we'll see a sprint or some new variants of the roadie any time soon? Maybe an upmarket model with some CF or Silver Twill?

Are we speaking of the same roadie knife? The one I just got has a very solid spring (4-5 on the pull) and the blade is held in place well by the spring even at half stop and open.

That's what I was wondering when reading that reply... maybe mistaken for another knife by accident?

I'm fine with the price. I've spent far more on lesser knives in the past.

Yes, I'm remembering the Roadie. I bought it when they were first released. Mine was black because the colors weren't available yet anywhere I could find online. Maybe I got a dud.

Been carrying one at work for over a year now. Its a great little knife for those times that even a SAK might be too much. I've recent picked up a Pingo to also play that role, but I think the roadie will still get plenty of pocket time, and its just so small and discrete, it makes the Pingo look like a monster!

Inwonder, do you guys know if the Spyderco Air would pass the TSA requirements? The Roadie was designed for this purpose right? Did it achieve this goal?

Yes and no. In that the roadie did meet the requirement, but that rule was never put into play, so it didn't end up hitting the target as such. I still think it was worth Sal releasing it, and I think its a testament to his design in that even though the rule that supported it never happened, the knife does stand on its own. Its a very useful design, and very easy to carry almost anywhere you can even dream of carrying an edge.

A note on TSA rules, they intentionally change things, and have a sliding scale in the hope that it will make it harder to plan an attack. We've seen how well that actually works. Best plan is to check a bag.

OK, I've carried the roadie for a few weeks now and it disappears in your pocket. Pretty light and slim. I've used it for several tasks and even took it out at a Town Council Meeting at the podium and opened an award to present to someone. Not a word about opening a knife in an open public meeting. I'll be keeping this one and carrying it as I like. Great purposeful design and idea.

I've held off on getting one of these for a long time, seeing the short width of the blade and the thick spine, I incorrectly envisioned a blade that would balk at cutting through material, I was wrong in that thinking ;)

Today at the Keystone knife show in Lewisburg PA I happened upon a TABLE full of Spyderco knives, what a pleasure to see that many different knives all on one table ! And amongst them were several coloured Roadie's all in a row. I ended up getting an orange one, as mentioned earlier in this thread, you can open and close it one handed, with a bit of dexterity and cautious handling, suffice to say if you cut yourself, you are doing it wrong :) so you may want to stick to a two hand opening method.

I have some leather on the table tonight and was pleased at how well it would cut through.

Nicely done Sal and sorry I had waited so long to pull the trigger on one.

Thanx Gary. It's an interesting design with unique features. I carry one quite a bit as a second blade.

I've had a Roadie for a while now, and carry it everyday on my car keys. It's become an invaluable aid to me and has come in handy at the most unexpected times. Love it's people friendlyness and as Sal said the blade steel is excellent. Great design Sal!

Agreed, here's a photo of mine taken today, added a small fob on there, makes it easier to draw from the pocket, the whip wrapping near the handle helps keep the paracord out of harms way aka the edge ;)
