It seems that not many people are willing to shell out for a Spyderco Rock Lobster. Although it's not exactly 'high-value,' I really dig this knife and am seriously thinking of getting one. :o

Any owners out there willing to share their opinions of the Rock Lobster?

I'm curios also. It's one of those models that I thought was plain ugly when I first for a long time. Now it looks good. What is it about it that makes it cost more than a Millie?

I bought a Rock Lobster from the Cutlery Shoppe a little over a year ago - it's a really nice piece, and I dig the blade shape a lot. Other than the street price, the only criticism for the knife itself I can give it is that the handle shape isn't very ergonomic, but granted, the Rock Lobster is based on one of Jens Anso's custom designs.

I love the looks and ergonomics of the Rock Lobster. Wish it was more affordable though, because as it stands there's no way I'll get my hands on one any time soon. I'd settle for 8cr13mov and FRN if it meant a price point around $80-$100. Maybe I'm missing the point, but I just love the overall shape.

I have one and carry it often. I like this blade shape and I find the handle comfortable. It rides very slim in the pocket.

I agree 100% here. I checked one out, loved it, but couldn't justify the price point. If it was $80-$100 I would definitely be in for one.

Did you get the Rock Lobster? I have been using mine for two weeks. The blade slices well, as good as an Opinel. The tip is very thin, it pierces almost as well as an acute point. The handle ergonomics are OK but should be better for the price. Thumb opening is smooth but slightly stiff, even with pivot tension adjustment. The edge arrived exceptionally sharp and is very easy to strop. Fine edge retension is fair when slicing cardboard and soft wood. The RL rides very well in the pocket due to its thinness. As of April, the lowest price was $185 + s/h. The best deal was Amazon ($194 w/ free shipping) with American Express points. Ultimately, the RL is well made but over priced. For a Jens Anso custom collaboration the Zulu is a better value. That being said, I like the Rock Lobster.

Yeah, no, I didn't end up getting a Rock Lobster. It's a good-lookin' knife for sure, and I bet it's a demon slicer, but in the end I decided that the juice wasn't worth the squeeze. Plus I was distracted by other Spydies and since added a CF Sage and (just yesterday) a Para 2 to my inventory... :o

Yeh, I'm with a lot of you folks on this. Great looking knife, I want one...but probably not going to happen.

Normal Spydercos are expensive for me. No way I can justify twice the price of say a Para 2 for one blade.

Does anyone know why it's priced so high?

I think the price is all about the designer, imo... *shrug* You can certainly get the same materials in a more affordable package.

Part of it is royalties to Jens Anso, part of it is exchange rate between dollars and yen, part of it is due to the nested liners requiring somewhat thicker G-10 and a good deal more machine work, part of it is from trying to recoup the R&D and tooling costs on a low-volume product. I'm sure there are other factors as well.

Not everyone can afford the same cutters, understandable. That is what is nice about Spyderco, they offer a large amount of designs at various price points. As far as expense goes, I would agree with Yab 100%. The Yen to US dollar exchange rate is not as friendly as we would like at this point. Storage, shipping, taxes, import/export fees, royalties, labor, machining, tooling, R&D, protos, markups, demand, etc. It all adds up in the end. There are some people in the world that think knives are made using Willy Wonka style magic (not saying you, but others have no idea what it takes). For example G10, Steel, and screws all get thrown into a giant mixing bowl, at the far side of the factory the oompa loompas are collecting finished knives off a conveyor belt and boxing them up. :D

I have never owned, but want to, a spyderco. I have to say though, if somebody gave me that I'd turn around and give it away. There is nothing that knife could do that could get me past the looks. Unless women found it sexy and threw themselves at whoever was carrying it, I guess that is one thing it could do to get me to keep it. :)

If it were less expensive - and a little smaller (3 3/4" blade with no choil is a beast of a knife), I'd be all over it. I love the way the blade is completely nested between the scales when closed, but the VG10, stainless liners, and G10 don't exactly scream high dollar (the Para2 has nested liners and more expensive steel, the Superleaf is using more steel with a way thicker blade and has G10 and similar construction, the Military is around the same size, etc.).

I'd actually consider it even due to its size if it were cheaper, but there's no way I'd want to see an 8CR13MOV or AUS8 version of it (FRN would be ok, but in this style, I think G10 works well). VG10 isn't that much more expensive over a cheaper steel and works very well.

I think that the price on this thing has to be attributed to Jens Anso's name being on it. Look at the Boker knives with his name on them - very expensive (not to say that any of them are not well designed knives - and to be honest, none of them are that terrible looking in my mind other than maybe the Zulu - but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so I'm not one to judge).

Spyderco has many collaborations with many different designers - not many are in the ~$200 plus price range, so I've got to ask if the design alone warrants the extra money. In my mind, it doesn't. I'd rather buy an original Spyderco design for ~$150 or less.

That's really the only reason I don't own one.

Well, after almost an entire year of sitting in the weeds like some sort of... weed-lurking... thing, my patience has paid off. I found a smokin' deal for a NIB Rock Lobster online at clearance price $160--still a little pricey but I think it's worth it. So I pounced (like a thing that pounces, I guess) and snapped it up. I'll be sure to post pics when it arrives!

Congrats on your purchase weasel!

Like you, I debated and waited quite some time before purchasing mine even though I fell in love with it at first sight. Once I had it though, I wondered why I waited so long :)

I think that you'll find the Rock Lobster to be quite an impressive piece...enjoy it.

Lesson learned: I must remember to never say this again about a knife I've never handled. The Rock Lobster has arrived... and it is beautiful. Might have to write a little haiku about it... :D Anyone else on the fence about the Rock Lobster: abandon all doubt :cool::thumbup:

It's also bigger than I had imagined. Here's a pic with an Endura 4 and a Para 2...

Yet another win for Spyderco! Thanks Sal!
