was browsing massdrop and noticed that they are selling the rubicon for 260USD, should I pull the trigger, or should I wait in hopes that prices drop further.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

If I had to guess I would think it will eventually settle around the same price as the southard ( who knows though if and when that could happen). Gorgeous knife

I doubt it will get to Southard price levels due to size, handle materials, fit & finish. It's almost at midtech levels.

lol, which means?

:foot:Oh crap! Yeah, that is opening a can of worms I really had no intention of doing. Ok, let me rephrase. The Rubicon was designed & built to be a more high-end production knife with a custom look to it. Seems like Spyderco is trying to take a bite out of the market where companies such as Brous or Olamic reside.

I gotta remember "midtech"= 4 letter word.;)
Thanks Purp!

Doubt it very much. There is no evidence to prove it or provide any any such context to make that claim. Seeing as how it is a new piece, the price is likely to drop maybe around $20 at best. If you like it, buy it. Keep in mind, when collaborations take place between a custom maker and a production company, the custom make usually gets a slice of the pie so to speak. The better the maker, the higher the chance they can demand a larger slice.

Massdrop hits your with sales tax for specific states, and their delivery times are way long - can be weeks to months for the item to actually be in your hand. They do all sorts of drop-shipping business as well and have missed delivery dates once. With my past experience, and the fact their prices aren't really low (certainly not worth the weeks and weeks of wait), I avoid them these days. It's best for non knife folks who aren't aware of bladeforums, but if you are on bf, there ain't a reason why you should get a knife on massdrop.

As for your question - I've seen Rubicon sell for $235 on the exchange. Keeping an eye on the exchange is fun as well! :-) Exchange and dealer closeout prices are always lower.

Just look this knife up,MSRP is $499.95 and has a S30V blade.Probably going to be on the 2016 Disco list.

Don't get too far ahead of yourself...
Olamic is on another level when it comes to bang-for-your-buck; you're getting nearly a custom for $500-600. Olamic also has their heat treating done locally on a small scale, not production.

Brous, I know nothing about so I can't say.
