Spyderco s30v vs Benchmade s30v

Anyone notice a difference between these 2?

I find my benchmades take a keener edge and keep it longer.

Is it the heat treat or blade geometry?

Example: Spyderco chokwe and benchmade 940. The benchmade wins.

benchmade's s30v tend to take a more polished edge and spyderco's tends to be toothier in my experience. think it might have something to do with the heat treat, but edge geometry most likely plays a role as well.

My Spyderco S30V knives being my Mini Manix and my brand new as of today Military model are some of the sharpest out of the box knives that I own and just now slicing up an old magazine made mince meat of it. Not sure of the Benchmade S30V but I would say that in my experience Spyderco has the superior out of box sharpness. Now I might have answered nothing in my response but it might be of worth to someone, somewhere.

MY benchmade 940 was a pain to sharpen, even on diamonds. The sharpmaker took way to long so out came the DMT's.

Snick..snick...snick...snick.... What's that sound? Shiney footprints. That's what. This thread will not end well. So I left some shiney footprints. Yikes. :)

Actually, truth be told, I don't think there's as much diff between BM's S30V and Spyderco's S30V as there is between Spyderco's S30V and CRK's S30V. But to actually SAY that out loud around here is sort of like shoplifting in a Muslim country. They chop off your hands first and ask questions later. So, basically, nothing gets said. :) Not that I'm SAYING ANYTHING or anything..... No way dude. CRK's S30V isn't like, you know, soft or anything. Not gonna hear it from me... (Dana Carvey Geo Bush Senior voice)....wouldn't be prudent.... :)

Which S30V Benchmades do you have?

I haven't noticed any significant difference between BM, Spyderco or CR in their S30V - uniformly hard, pain in the *ss to reprofile, keeps a 15º edge well. The models I'm referring to are the BM440&940, the Spyderco Sage, and various Sebenzas. I can't speak comparatively about older blades of this type, but this is a total non-issue in the current batches of this steel in my experience.

Now, out of the box, Spydercos seem to have better consistancy with thier edges. The Gayle Bradley (I know, not S30V) I just received is ridiculously sharp. The last BM I got wasn't terribly sharp when I opened the box - it was the 440. After a couple of good sharping sessions though, it's a razor too.

Do you have a Sebenza or just repeating something that you heard?

Every Spyderco knife I own far outshines my Benchmades' "out of the box sharpness" by far. I still love them both and own a bunch of both of them. :)

Haven't noticed any difference in S30V between Spyderco and BM, but the Spydies have all come with much better factory edge geometries. My new Benchmades left the factory with 40-50 degrees inclusive angles so re-profiling would have been necessary had i kept them for use.

What does that have to do with S30v? I don't have a S30v Benchmade yet but Spyderco compared to my Sebenza is about the same. Both are very good.:)

My Spyderco Military & Par-Military S30V are both light years sharper and more finely honed & polished "from the factory" as my Benchmade 940 & Griptilian S30V knives.

So what does that have to do with BM vs Spyderso S30v? :)

Benchmade's S30V and D2 has been discussed as poorly prepared or treated, here in another thread.

I love spyderco knives.... Perhaps my favorite production knife company to date... But I do have to say benchmades s30v is def a bit more edge retentive right up there with strider...I also love my crk's but never had chipping in benchmade or strider s30v !!! with spyderco and crk I have had minor chipping!!!! I'm no fanboy as my favorite are crk and spyderco knives... but just sayin!!!

If I voted it would be that Spydie wins out on the treatment of the steel, the blade/edge geometry, the finished cutting edge / the out of the box sharpness.

For now anyway, I've only sharpened one so far, a BM and I can't bring it out to even the obtuse factory bevel's sharpness.

That's my problem though as the crummy sharpener. :D

Any chipping in the Spyderco would be due to the thin edges they apply IMHO

My experience cutting cardboard and rope is that my Spyderco S30V holds an edge a little better than my BM S30V (with the same edge angles and finish).

I would agree with Harry Callahan regarding CR - my small Sebenza couldn't keep up with my Buck, Spyderco, or BM S30V (it wasn't even close). I ended up sending the blade to Paul Bos for a proper heat treat.
