Spyderco s30v vs Benchmade s30v

My experience cutting cardboard and rope is that my Spyderco S30V holds an edge a little better than my BM S30V (with the same edge angles and finish).

I would agree with Harry Callahan regarding CR - my small Sebenza couldn't keep up with my Buck, Spyderco, or BM S30V (it wasn't even close). I ended up sending the blade to Paul Bos for a proper heat treat.

How did that BOS heat treatment work out for u???

the finest s30v i've seen is my buck TNT. i've had both BM and spydies vary a great deal.

spy-bm who is winning.................
Who cares?

There's too many design variables, IMO, to tell the difference between them. I'd guess that an identical blade, with each companies S30V, that a vast majority of users couldn't tell the difference.

Blade geometry. Spyderco primarily uses S30V on blades with 3-4mm flat grinds. Benchmade uses them on saber hollow or flat grinds of similar thickness (like the 940, Rukus and Skirmish) May make a difference in edge retention.

I find Spyderco S30V to keep a hair-splitting edge for maybe a week, then a hair-scraping edge for a month or so (assuming daily use).

My experience with an admittedly small sample, has been that Benchmade seem to run their S30V a point or so harder than Spyderco. Between the two, I prefer the Spyderco S30V because it is very tough and yet takes a fine edge. The OOB experience of sharpness between the two is a bit one sided, as I have yet to receive a shaving edge from Benchmade Blue class knives, yet all of my Spyderco knives will shave. Curiously, the only shaving sharp Benchmades I own are the Chinese made Red class. Go figure.

Now don't think that I am anti-Benchmade, because I am not. In fact, I have an Onslaught on the way and I have an addiction to Grips, but I have to call 'em like I see 'em.

Were there any problems with bladeplay or anything? I had someone reHT a Mnandi and it created blade play.

There were no problems with blade fit/play afterwards. It came back with a slight amber color, which has mostly been removed through the use of some Metal-Glo. But the blade fit and lockup were not altered in any way that I can see.

I wonder if your Mnandi blade was warped.

I would seriously advise closing this thread now. There will be hostility and maybe the occasional infraction.

Both s30vs are great, i cant tell a difference in mine.

My Spyderco Military & Par-Military S30V are both light years sharper and more finely honed & polished "from the factory" as my Benchmade 940 & Griptilian S30V knives.

So what does that have to do with BM vs Spyderso S30v? :)

Benchmade's S30V and D2 has been discussed as poorly prepared or treated, here in another thread.

People forgot to bring in the variable of where the blades are heat treated - U.S. and Taiwan for Spyderco.

Then there is the variable of when the knife was made - I suspect both Benchmade and Spyderco have changed the heat treat for S30V over the years.

the taiwanese spyderco blades are heat treated in the US.

Sounds like the old Pepsi vs Coke battles from the 80's and early 90's;)

A lot of people on here would swear they can tell the difference.

Should note that Spyderco says CPM-S30V while Benchmade says S30V. Benchmade and other companies may actually be using CPM-S30V. If so, most likely the only difference will be edge geometry and hardening, which can vary on any given production run. S30V itself would have too large carbides for use in knives so I'd assume they all use some kind of powder metallurgy S30V.

Here's crucible's specs BTW.

This conversation is stupid to begin with. Edge geometry and finish have everything to do with sharpness and edge retention, WAY more than heat treatment. Until they make 2 identical knives, one being heat treated by spyderco and one being heat treated by benchmade, THEN you can argue about whos is better.
