Spyderco Sage 2 Review

Very nice comparison, thank You! If compare TNT and Sage - which cuts better? I mean delicate slicer-cut:)

I'd be in the market for a knife like the Caly3 but in 2.75" format. This would make the overall length a little shorter and more convenient for pocket carry. I have a Rookie and a Caly3, but the Rookie spends more time in my pocket, while the Caly3 spends more time on the shelf. The Caly 3CF is a nicer knife, but I like the smaller size - and I prefer lockbacks.
A smaller version of the Caly3 (VG10 preferred) would get my bucks!

Hi Flash,

Funny you should ask. We've been working on just such a model. The pattern is finished. Now we're trying to decide what kind of lock to use, or make it a non-locker?

Would this be like the Cat but with Ti scales? that would be amazing!

I'd prefer a locking blade. I like lockbacks, but would pick up a liner-lock, if quality were high.

Tough to call - the TNT blade is longer and probably better for kitchen work. The Sage is maybe a touch sharper out of the box and a little pointier - perhaps better for scalpel type work.

Thank you! Now I'm looking forward to get TNT!
And It's remind me AC/DC's song "TNT":)

I just got my Sage 2 a couple of days ago, and while I love almost everything about it, I have one major criticism. To quote Nutnfancy's review of the Tenacious, "The in-handle blade retention sucks." If you've seen his video of how he got cut from this, then you should be shuddering. With a strong downward flick, I can get 100% deployment of the blade. Even a light flick results in 50% deployment. With tip-up carry only, all I can say is, "Be careful when you put your hand in your pocket!" Everyone expects less-expensive knives to have certain idiosyncrasies, some you can live with, and some you can't, but at this price level, I expect absolute perfection. In my opinion, this is a design flaw that should have never made it off the drafting table, much less past the prototype stage.

Still want a Sage 2 ??? You can have mine for $140, LNIB, shipped USPS Priority Mail, with insurance.

Have you contacted Spyderco about this?
This is the first time I've heard of anyone having a problem with the Sage 2. It sounds to me like you have a defective knife but hopefully Spyderco can take care of this for you. I just went an grabbed mine and no matter how hard I try to flick or shake it open I can’t get the blade to move. I'm shaking it like crazy while holding onto just the very ends of the handle trying to flick it to open but it just doesn't even begin to move. Best of luck getting this problem corrected.

I contacted Spyderco through their web site. Hopefully, this problem can be resolved.
If they can get it to snap closed like my Delica 4, I'll be a happy camper.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Best of luck to you, I'm sure that Spyderco will take care of the problem.

I've had my Sage 2 on me since I bought it a couple weeks ago (love it) and was surprised to hear about the problem you're having. I tried to get any of my rotation of EDC's to open up like that and my big Skirmish did but I think that it may just be a bit too loose at the pivot. I tried as hard as I could but couldn't get the blade to budge on the Sage. Hopefully yours will be the same way very soon.

I will go along with what a few other members have said already, so....yes, a lockback plz!!

Hi lava_lamp -

Awesome!

I really like the in-depth comparison to other familiar knives.

Well done!

best regards -

This is a real model of a good, no - great, review. I particularly value the comparisons with other knives. Thanks for what I know took a lot of time, thought and care.

Sal:

While a 2.75 inch lockback Sage would be nice, a 2.75 inch Slipit Sage would be wonderful. Frankly, the UKPK series is my favorite modern style knife. I carry my UKPK DP religiously (I hope you do a CF and Ti version of it, as well).

While I really like the UKPK, I think the Sage series is just that much more ergonomic. Besides, less face political realities, slip-its are where most of us are headed whether we want it or not.

Hi Wayne,

1st model will be CF, 2.75" blade. Assiming the design is sound and "glitches" are worked out, the plan is to follow up with 2 Titanium versions (different textures) and a Slipit version.

Sal,

That sounds like a nice line up there of the mini-Sage. I particularly look forward to the Slip-It version. I loe the UKPK, but I think the deeper choil of the Sage (or perceived deeper choil) will make it more ergonomic (at least for my hands).

Thanks for the update.
