Spyderco Salt 1 vs Tasman Salt

I like my fillet knives to be razor sharp and I sharpen them frequently. Since serrated edges are such a PITA to sharpen even after acquiring special sharpening equipment, I fail to understand why anyone would want a serrated edge for fishing. Can one of you guys give me a clue? TIA

I use either the Tasman Salt or the Salt 1 as back-ups for my Aqua Salt or Caspian Salt when kayak fishing (ocean) or snorkeling. For me they are tools to cut rope, fishing line, stray fishing nets, kelp and the like and they are all fantastic. For cleaning and filleting I use the Spyderco Catcherman.

When you catch a yellowtail or WSB, you'll be wishing you had a real fillet knife. :D

Don't understimate the Catcherman GallantEdge...(although I do have a couple of Microtech Black Marlin fillet knives for the bigger fish). ;)

MEH, It has a blade length of less than 5" which would feel like half a knife to me.

How do you like the caspian salt? Really like the looks of it but the shape of it makes me think it might be awkward to use.

im curious too.

id say the hawkbill would be better for fishing but if you might want to carry it for edc id go for the salt1 i love mine and miss it terribly since i sent it in to spyderco for sharpening. man i love factory edges

Hi. I am both an avid scuba diver and fisherman. I own a salt one and my dad owns a Tasman. The big downside (and the reason I dont have the Tasman) is that you can not use a hawk bill to cut something agents a flat surface like a cutting board. The other downside could be that it is hard to sharpen, but it is very easy to do on a sharp maker or similar system. If you can get past this two issues than it's a beast of a blade.....but if not the salt 1 is sweet too....it's certainly saved my hide a number of times.

I'll have to agree with you, fella.

But if the OP is looking for an H1 folder to add to his tacklebox, I'd say go for a Pacific Salt PE--more blade length than the Salt 1, which would make it better for cleaning/filleting, imo. The Tasman might be more ideal for commercial fishing where you'd be working around a lot of nets and rigging... but I wouldn't know from experience.
