spyderco sharpening service

I just got two Delicas back that I sent in for sharpening, and I was extremely satisfied with the service. The turnaround time was very reasonable (about three weeks), and the knives came back as sharp as they were when new. One was serrated and the other was CE; the serrations on both were very sharp and well-defined, and the section of plain edge was also as new. I would not hesitate to send any knife back to the Spyderco factory for sharpening.

I sent in my Endura for sharpening. While the edge wasn't necessarily damaged, it wasn't exactly a simple sharpening deal either. I was very pleased with the results. Turnaround was about a week and a half.

Does anyone know if they just hand sharpen on a sharpmaker
or do they use some other method?

Yeah, I do know :-)

That is definitely NOT a sharpmaker job...

I would say they sharpen it on a belt grinder or something, it is clearly the same tool they use to grind new Spydies. You can't tell a regrinded knife from a new one (...from looking at the edge, of course :-)

I agree with Dennis, it is a top notch job. They also perform any lubing and tightening that is needed...a true Spydie-spa treatment.

One can also get their sharpening done at the SFO while they shop. In that case, it is done expertly on a Sharpmaker, in the open for you to see.

Thanks for the info. Ive sent in several knives to be sharpened, they never returned with the factory edge, just touched up. Im picking up my pro-venator at the SFO this weekend, They replaced the kraton grip and sharpened. Ill see if they re-profiled the blade. I do keep them sharp on the sharpmaker, it would be nice to have the factory edge again.

Opiate,

I'd say it depends on the degree of wear the blade shows....

when the edge is still nice but only a little dull, perhaps they only touch it up with a sharpmaker, because this thorough regrinding job always eats away quite a bit of steel of your blade; and they don't do that until they feel it is necessary.

Why shorten the life of a knife when a touch up is all it needs?

But I am pretty sure that if you tell them explicitly NOT to use a SM but regrind the whole edge on a belt grinder, they will happily do so. At least it's your knife, your decision.
