And I'm wondering if you guys have any suggestions. Spyderco wants me to send the stones back, but with the way that freight is right now it would cost me as much to ship them as it would to just go and buy new stones. Spyderco won't pay the freight for the return, only to ship the new stones to me.

The chips are on the apexs of the stone. Will this effect the way that the stone sharpens?

IMHO if it is bought as new and found defective either the seller or Spyderco should pay you for the shipping costs.
Have you tried contacting your seller?

I contacted Spyderco, but I haven't gone to the supplier. I thought Spyderco might handle it directly......but apparently they don't. In general Spyderco is awesome about stuff so this seemed kinda weird.

My fine stones came the same way. Chips on one side. I got the same answer when I inquired about them. As you have stated, it seems more trouble then it is worth to send them back. I just use the other side of the stone. Even so it is alittle disapointing to purchase a new product and have it come defective.

I don't think Spyderco is in the wrong for only paying shipping one way. I'd say the store you bought them from is responsible for paying shipping both ways. You shouldn't be out of pocket because of defective goods, so not only should the store cover both shipping costs, ideally they would also throw in a little something to apologize for the inconvenience of the delay.

Except if it is common that new goods come in such condition from the manufacturer.

If the chips are on the ends of the stones, I wouldn't worry about it. I rarely use the top 1/2" or so, and the bottom end goes into the sharpmaker. Ceramics chip, it's a fact of life. Find some way to store the rods so they don't knock into each other and make more chips in worse places. If you don't feel the edge hit any bump or notch when you sharpen, then it's definitely fine.

On the one hand, I want new stuff that I buy to be "perfect", but I also don't want to pay 10 times as much if they have to throw out 9 of every 10 rods for blemishes that don't affect function.
