Spyderco Southard deep carry clip?

How do you go about ordering one of these? I looked on your blog and there doesn't seem to be an order form or anything. Just message you in Bladeforums?

Update: Never mind. I found the form in the FAQ.

I received two more orders for these clips this morning. EDIT: Scratch that three more orders. I only had a limited number of the screws necessary to replace yours. I cannot supply the screws any longer and ran out of those yesterday. I only made clips for each screw sorry guys. There was only five of the screws to begin with and all five are gone. I have one clip here I was planning to use as a template to make more but for you two guys that ordered this morning I have no screws to supply you and you can't mount the clip without. So what to do? I figure cancel the orders cause I can't really justify selling you a clip you can't use without the correct hardware. What I would suggest is that as I get four of you lined up that you four go in and find a donor knife splitting it four ways or somethin. I don't know. Its just an idea and for that matter the entire venture was just to try to get something wanted into the hands and pockets of those asking. I can make the clips. I just don't have these odd ball screws or a source to find them and I don't even know the size of them to order so at this point the screw needed to go into the rear spacer in this folder is the issue.

My blog has grown such that it really has a lot there and it can be confusing to find stuff even for me. The menu to the right really helps using the arrows to open each month to see what I posted. The direct link to my updated info for my clips is found here in my blog. http://www.strsbackyardknifeworks.blogspot.com/2009/10/low-rider-pocket-clips-for-folding.html

This is the folder I used to get screws. The body screws used in this folder are the exact same screws as those in the body of the Southard. They are longer though and that is needed to get to the threads to make this work to mount the clip. Once mounted it seemed pretty secured to me and I belive with a little loctite that this will work fine for users. I've certainly seen far worse much easier moved and loosened clips sold as new in the industry anyway. The Bee L04 (buy it now $10.80 on ebay) or the L05-1 either one had screws that worked great for the body replacement screw. The heads match, size is the same, and its just the longer length. If anyone finds out the actual number or designation for ordering these screws please pass that on to me we'll order a bag of them or something. Til then this seems to be the path of least resistance. Oh and as a side note. The L05-1 seemed to have no problem with the Southard screws working to replace them so all I had to do was swap them one knife to the other. On the one I donated well that was not the case as I did not have customers knives but the screws should swap excepting in rare cases. I might add that the new longer screw used on the Southard also tightened down all the way like the original getting nice and snug just fine so it can hold the longer screw on one side of each stand off used in the folder build.

Hey STR,

It looks like you tackled the deep carry clip for the Southard but I have a new request.
Just wondering if you think it would be possible for you to make a deep carry clip for a left side/ left hand for the Spyderco Southard flipper? Ideally the position would look and fit like the stock clip except if it wrapped over the knife from the clip holes it would naturally be deep carry. I've traced out a rough sketch on clear plastic page protector wrapped over the knife. I just am wondering if it will be strong enough. Can you help?

I believe the jaws of my pliers would not form fit it to the handle to properly wrap it up to a commercial professional look. It may function but I'd bet it would look amateurish due to the lay of the clip. I'd pass on this due to the rounded nature of the handle design profile I would not be able to lay the part crossing the end of the knife flat up against the body the way it needs to be on the end and I certainly don't have the means to put a curve or shoe shine profile to the clip to sort of bow it to fit the handle on it like it should. The only other alternative would be to mill in flat spots on the handle to take out the rounded of each handle so there was a nested area nice and flat for the clip to tuck into to do the wrap. I hope you follow that. I'm not doing modification anymore so I'd pass but that would be the only way and even then it would require some strong but narrow tools to make the precise 90` bends to do that wrap nice and tight where it mounts and keep it flat all the way across. Its just in my mind and hard to relay down in words but it screams a waste of time to try to do it at least with the tools available to me and considering no one else is likely to ever ask for the same thing I'd be hard pressed to take commission on it. I'm also trying to picture how close it would be and the result if you didn't lay it down right and the blade banged into it at the tip as it closed. Its got a lot of hurtles just dwelling on the idea some. I just repaired a SOG Seal 2000 knife with a broken clip that wraps similar but screws to the top of the handle with two tiny little short screws. It took me three attempts but I finally got one I could live with so I know from this and a couple others that these type of clips and the way they mount are always problems to fit well. With your idea there are even more bends that have to be spot on or its for naught. If I had print technology to metal print the part after designing it that would be the best and most precise way I think for a job like this. For my backyard I just don't see it looking good enough to leave my shop. At least in my head anways! :D

Hi STR,

Just wondered if you've had time to check whether the screws I ordered from that "kits" site will work for the Southard?

I have not received them yet to do that. Thanks tho

double post. Damn this is getting old. I surely am not the only one the system wigs out on like this with? I swear now and then this BF system has a mind of it's own!

Wanted to drop a quick note of thanks here. I love this clip. I hope you find a source for screws so that other folks can enjoy it, I know I love mine. Here are a couple of photos of it on my LSCF modified Southard (LSCF work done by Barry H.):

Found some screws with the help of a customer and I have sent out a few already so since these are slightly longer than even the ones originally snagged from the Bee knife I think it prudent to wait until the feedback comes in from these first ones sent out to be sure they screw down and work for the customers. I no longer have the folder here to test this so if by chance these screws are too long I don't want to sell a bunch just to have to walk folks through shortening them or have them go to the trouble of mailing the screws back so I can do that for them. If these work we'll know soon as I hope some using the new screws from Knifekits arrive to their new homes Monday am or pm and perhaps Tues. if not Mon. In the mean time I tentatively have enough screws to do 20 screw and clip conversions for the Brad Southard Spyderco folder for those of you wanting one. We'll see how long they last. I had 25 screws yesterday!

I used another screw I had (not the correct width but narrower) just to test the length and I'm pretty sure these are not too long. Anyway, we'll know for sure pretty soon.

I'm thinking they will be even better than the ones we snagged off the original Bee knives too and fairly confident due to how short the Spyderco screws are that they will not bump in the middle of the stand off. We'll see though it is a thin folder.

Although I've thinned my scales quite a bit I didn't re-countersink the screw holes so the thinned scales won't make much difference.

Well, I just got my clip today (after the long weekend) and it fits perfectly, including the new machine screw! Just what I wanted! It actually improves the grip quite a bit, since I now don't have that pointy thing digging into my palm.

Far out man! Thanks for the feedback. Post some pics when you can!

Thanks and glad you are liking it.

Hey STR,
Do you still have some of the Southard low rider clips? I'd like to get one if possible.

I need to make them up but I have the screws now for replacing the one you will need. I do need you to fill out my work order form and submit that to me so I can get you in line. I have three others to make so far this weekend so I can add yours to those and do them all the same day; Thanks
