Spyderco Stainless Cricket - Passaround - SIGNUP

ok, guys, it goes out tomorrow morning!

Final impressions:

cool knife, but.... I like the thinness, but it's almost too thin, and with the screws, it almost looks like a SAK with the scales off. I think if I had one with thin micarta scales over the SS, that would be CLASS!

also, where the scale is thinned to make the frame lock there is a little dent in the steel on the outside, almost like it is so thin there the pressure of the lock is pushing the steel up. let me know what you guys think about this when you see the knife.

I think I will have to wait until I can get someone to put an overlay on one of these to get one.

Nathan

Cricket and mystery knife arrived yesterday.

First impressions: Cricket is SMALL! I knew it was going to be small, but this thing is really tiny. Somewhat difficult to open with my long fingers, but not too bad. There's a small ball bearing in the liner lock, and it caused a few problems for me. On opening, the blade makes a little click as it passes the ball. However, if you don't open the knife enough, the lock doesn't actually engage. I figured it out, but could be dangerous if you're in a hurry. Excellent ergonomics when open. It's very easy to hold and control. I had some boxes to open today, and it performed admirably. The serrations aren't so hot for opening envelopes, but it can be done easily, with a little practice. Carry is excellent, because of the small size, thinness and light weight. I didn't feel at all weird carrying it in a somewhat knife-unfriendly environment.

As for the mystery knife, I really like the handle. It's smooth and comfortable, and gives a respectable grip. It is more difficult for me to open one-handed, but is easier to open two-handed than the Cricket. Didn't carry it today, so no cutting tests.

More evaluation to come, then I'll send it along Wednesday.

Hello All,

I just picked up the knives from the Post Office moments ago. I will post my thoughts after I have had a bit to check 'em out.

V,

For the time being there probably won't be anymore passarounds to canada due to the prohibitive costs of getting them through customs. Sorry.

Hello all,

The Knives are on their way to Crit. I will email the tracking and Insurance numbers to both Crit and Dave.

Thanks again Dave!

O.K.

SS Cricket - Small, thin, and sturdy. It was just too small for my hands to open easily but once opened worked like a champ. My wife liked it but still gave her Meerkat a higher rating due to the Meerkat being easier to hang on to. The stainless steel and it's small size gives it a flashy look that would make the Cricket a good "dress" knife. Carriablility is a non issue here.

The Mystery Knife - The worst thing about this knife is that it is discontinued. It is small enough for easy carry but stout enough for many day to day tasks. The small size makes it a bit harder for me to one hand this one open (like the Cricket). Nice blade shape and material. Not a bad little knife.

Once again I want to thank Dave for the chance to check these knives out. These passarounds have helped me make several knife buying decisions.

Have a great weekend everyone :D

Got the knives today.
Didn't use either knife for anything yet but looking forward to it tonight, that cricket is really cute. Anyway, I've never handled a knife made by the company the mystery knife was made by so I'm really lookin forward to that. Will use for 3 days then pass em on.

Thanks again Dave for the chance to not only handle, but actually use knives before deciding on the purchase :D

I figure it's better to post it than to tell 5.0 I'll email it to him and then forget to do it again
Sorry, no shoe fly pie to send with the knives this time Dave R :D Let's see if you get em as fast as I got the one you sent me.
I'll write my review in a bit when I get a chance.

THANKS DAVE!

I do something stupid everytime! First it was re-using the one-time use packaging, now it's not realizing I needed to have it insured. I didn't see it until I re-read the entire thread. I'm so sorry, I'll stop doing your passarounds till I get some sense.
At least I've learned quite a few things I didn't know about shipping knives :D

::Learning from my mistakes one at a time.

Crit, thanks for the heads up. I'll be lookin' for it tomorrow. Hey no problem on the shoofly pie, an Amish Farmers Market just opened in town, they have 'em there. :)

Let ya know when I get the package.

SS Cricket:
Tiny, VERY tiny, thin, and absolutely adorible. Flashy, and good for a "dress" knife. I wouldn't have any doubts about wearing it even to church. I always show my best bud the knives I get on these passarounds, and she always tells me what she thinks. She doesn't care, but she pretends to just like I pretend to listen when she talks to me, but this time she got a ear to ear grin and said "aww, that's so cute", and it really is. The blade is very ergonomic, and very good at what I used it for. I liked the way it looked, felt and cut. But what I didn't like was that I seemed to have a lil trouble opening it, and even more trouble hooking it back onto my uniform. Granted it only cost me a few extra seconds, those few seconds are "precious seconds" wasted in my line of work. But in the end, I am going to end up picking one of these up. And I owe it all to you Dave :p, thanks.

Mystery Knife:
This is gonna sound weird, because it truely IS a good knife, but I just didn't like it. I had ALOT of trouble opening it one-handed, and using two hands is outta the question. No matter how hard I tried, my pinky kept getting in the way when opening it. And the lock was a PITA also. For some reason everytime I opened and closed it I thought 'I don't like this knife'. I mean, it is a good, quality knife, and worked well and all.. I just didn't like it. The handles are nice though, very grippy, and it cut well. As I said before, I hadn't ever handled a knife by this maker before.. and to be honest never thought much of them, because I didn't know much about them. After using this knife and seeing that they do in fact make quality knives I'll have to check them out and do a bit of reading up on them.

Thanks alot Dave.

[Edited to add]
BTW, I looked around in the review section and couldn't find a thread on these two knives. If there is one if someone could point me in the direction I'll copy/paste this over to there. Thanks.

picking one of these up

That's one of the cool things, heh, maybe I should get a percenatge of generated sales. :p (I don't BTW.)

my pinky kept getting in the way

I have the same problem on small knives, usually it's just a matter of getting used to how to open it. But I think you made a good point that gets lost sometimes, someone may not like a knife, but it doesn't necessarily make it a bad knife. It might be great for someone else.

Oh definately. I personally didn't like it, but that's just preferance. I wouldn't even think twice about recommending it. I hope everyone understood what I was saying.

I received the knives today. Will type my comments and ship out Thursday.

Cool little frame-lock knives.

OK, this passaround is almost over and no one has ventured a guess on the mystery knife. There are some good clues in this thread but maybe a picture would help. So what do ya think TOB9595 & Kennieyk. Care to take a guess?

The pic reminds me of a CRKT crawford/Kasper but they're not discontinued and they're not small. I think I remember that it's a small knife. I am so looking forward to the cricket and seeing the MK Mystery Knife
