I am going to a knife show this weekend and I am going to buy one of these two knives. Which one would you guys recommend and why?r

Whichever one floats your boat the best. They are pretty comparable. Just choose the look and feel you prefer. That matters a whole lot more than what other people like. Enjoy the show.

Do a search for Starmate AND Wegner... there are numerous threads that discuss both.

And I like 'em both... those are my two favorite Spyderco's by a comfortable margin.

Starmate is tip-down carry; Wegner is tip-up. This is the biggest difference, really.

I agree with Fred: handle them both and get the one that feels best to you.

Having said that, ... I have the Wegner and love it so much that I'd like to get a second one rather than a Starmate. But that's just me.

When you go to the show, see if you can find a Wegner Jr., and consider it among your choices. All are great knives, but that little Wegner is soo sweet!

I picked the Starmate since the design looked good for my hunting application and I particularly wanted to try 440V alloy. It takes a very sharp edge and resists wear. The Starmate is relatively light and compact for a knife with a 5mm thick blade.

The Wegner blade is ATS-34 which I wasn't as interested in. The ATS-34 is harder and probably less inclined to roll the edge if you hit something hard, but maybe more likely to chip. The blade on the Wegner is thinner (3.5mm) which can improve cutting performance. The blade on the Wegner tilts forwards a bit relative to the handle which I didn't want for my application. It surprises me, but the Spyderco specs indicate that the Wegner is significantly heavier than the Starmate.

I've played with both of them...I prefer the Starmate because the handle is straight instead of curved like the Wenger...The blades look pretty much the same...I really liked both of them but, would personally go with the Starmate...

The Starmate looks better, but the Wegner is the better knife to me. I havent beeen able to find another knife that has the ergonomics of the Wegner. If you get a chance to hold one of each you will see what I mean.

The Wegner, by all means. ATS-34 is less prone to chipping, although Spyderco heat treats their 440V as well as can be done. The Wegner is heavier because it's locking liner is a full liner, rather than the Starmate's nested lock, and it has a full stainless backspacer.

Hold both knives with a significant grip, and you'll probably find that the Wegner is much more comfortable.

Gotta say Wegner-
Been my EDC for a couple of years. Beautiful ergos & does all you ask of it & more. I really like the Starmate, but the Wegner just fits the hand so well. Almost switched but didn't. Grab a Jr. if you find one as well. A real sleeper. Excellent pattern.
