Spyderco Starmate...what a beast!!!

Not that I'm heavily concerned one way or the other, but I'm a big fan of VG-10. I'm often baffled why so many complain about it.

If I had to guess it's that a lot of people here and in other places have possible gotten a bit bored with VG10 as it seems to be the steel de jour for almost everything coming out of Seki City for the last 7 years. Folks that are new to the knife world or even Spyderco for that matter, like VG10 just fine. Brilliant designs, and the same steel. Other manufacturers do it and get away with it some how at even greater price points. People might have also wanted to see this specific model made in the US with some sort of Carpenter or BU super steel. It's an iconic piece/design that would have potentially done well as a LE in this format.

I've had my Starmate for about three years now. I didn't take to it at first, but lately it's been my favorite EDC. It's super slick: locks up rock solid, super slick washers, no play in the pivot. The blade shape is terrific. It reminds me of a more user-friendly Umnumzaan.

A few days ago I posted the story of my first Spyderco. It is the old version of the knife you have bought.

My first Spyderco was a TERZUOLA , the year was 2000, the occasion was a week hike with my 13 year old son .
A S&W 9 mm gun I had just broke down and I needed some safety net for being out there in the wild with the kid. In a mens gifts store I found a knives stand, it took an hour and a half to scrutinize them all, and to end it I chose the Spyderco TERZUOLA. I have carried that knife for the next 10 years 24/7 (sleeping with it clipped to my underwear).A true EDC.
Originally it was partially serrated, later on I changed the edge: no serration and shaved metal to form a hollow grind. The metal is cpm440v. No metal reenforcement under the G10 scales.
I don't carry it anymore since I got myself a nice collection of newer Spyderco knives including PM2,lots of Dragonfly 2 versions and so on.
Bob TERZUOLA will be forever my legendary "first spidy"

Incredible back story.
I've seen you post that photo in other threads and I thought it was looking a little thin in the blade!!
Just assumed it was from 10 years of solid use and a LOT of sharpening. I have a PM2 that has seen some heavy use (a little abuse) and has been sharpened down drastically over time to a visibly different shape. Interesting that yours was a Spyderedge originally.

Oh yeah, I can fully understand that.
