Spyderco steels

I was just reading about the 440 steel used in the Military and wonderig how it compares to VG-10 (which I believe Spyderco also uses) and BG-42. The only other knives which use VG-10, as far as I know, are Fallkniven. Anyway, the Military sounds very tough and durable. Will this steel be available in other models (like the Wegners, which would meet my personal needs better, I think)?

440V is used in US Models only, the Wegner blades are made in Japan.

The VG-10 is only available from Spyderco on the full size Calypso and the Moran....

By the end of the year, all US Models will be 440V, I am told..

Just my 5 francs...(exchange rate, you know)

Danelle,

Dare I ask which models are made in the U.S., besides the Military and the Native?

Gracias,

Simple to answer that one. By far 440V is the best when it comes to edge holding. If it is not the most rust resistant. It would have to be very close. At least as far as the steel's the Spyderco uses. Danelle, I did not know they were going to 440V across the board. Have they thought about doing a knife in 420V?

Danelle,
i too would if possible like a partial list of the sydercos made in the US, as i swear by the 440-V thats in my Military serrated knife. one of the sharpest folders i own. my problem is my wife likes it as well, so i'm having to get another one, as i can't get it out of her possesion long enough to use it. Darn!! glad to hear that Spyderco is going to be putting 440-V blades in some of their other models. will have to increase my "I Want" list.
anyway if possible, let us know what models will possibly have the 440-V steel in them.
Thanks a bunch.

Larry

How is the rust resistance of ATS-55 and GIN-1? I know that ATS-34 is not as "stainless" as many others. AUS-8 seems to be quite good in this area. Is ATS-55 the same as ATS-34 or better at resisting? Jim

ATS-55 is as crappy as ATS-34 regarding rust-resistance. From my experience with an ATS-55 Civilian, it is the fastest rusting blade I ever seen. Search this site for other threads on "ATS-55" and find what others think of it (basically what they all think of ATS-34). I would also recommend that you search for a thread called "440-C is the Steel for Me" - very interesting.

GIN-1 is an excellent rust-resistant steel and so is AUS-8 but GIN-1 has better edge holding the the later.
