Hey guys! I am looking for a small hi-tec EDC FB. Planning mostly to use it for various general tasks in the urban environment, but also want the knife to be strong enough to be used as a survival knife and for self defence. Prefer to carry it on the belt and occasionally on the neck. Quite obvious choises seem to be Spyderco Street Beat and Fallkniven WM1. Could you please tell pros and cons of these to? Which quality and fit and finish is better (never handled them, don't have choise in my country)? Which is more comfortable? Thermorun vs Micarta? Handshapes? Other Options? Thank you.

Both beautiful knives:thumbup:.

The street beat will be the most ergonomic and comes with kydex sheath.
The sheath is rather big compared to the Fallkniven sheath.
The wm1 is a slimmer knife en so is the sheath.

The street beat is designed as self defense knife by Fred Perrin and the wm1 would be more of a survival knife.
I read somewhere it was designed for people with small hands (read woman).
But i think this doesn't matter because it a beautiful little knife.

I think the streetbeat looks more classy (more custom like) and uses more expensive materials.
Very nice micarta handles en a nicer kydex sheath.

But you can't go wrong with either of them.

I saw the Street Beat at a local dealer. The balance and ergos are beyond excellent and the handle material is my favourite ever. However, carrying it may be a little difficult.

I have not seen a Fallkniven WM1 before, so can't help you there.

Other options: Swamp Rat Vex. Most excellentest general purpose small fixed blade I ever handled. Unlimited lifetime warranty, outstanding HT'd D2 steel.

The WM1 is a great last resort survival knife, small game hunting knife, substitute for a folder (like at a sandy beach) and nice for just about everything.
People might feel it to be a bit small and the handle is "flat" but it doesnt matter since you probably use it for small tasks anyway.

You can get the WM1 as a blade only. Then it looks almost like a Becker Necker.

The Street Beat looks more agressive than the WM1. It is European knife tradition vs US knife tradition.

I will buy the WM1 blade and use it in my survival kit.

Fallkniven Sweden (Europe)
Spyderco designed by French Fred Perrin (Europe).

And both knives are made in Japan:D.

So both designs are European;).

Many thanks for the replies! I am actually viewind a small FB as a substitute to a folder - I currently use BM Sequel as EDC, it is a great and useful knive, hovewer axis seems to be difficult to clean and easy to get dirty, expecially with sand, that is why i avoided using it during some camping trips, when it was actually needed. I would also like a little bit more grip than aluminium handles can offer - SB has a stud and WM1 has a rubber-like handles. That is why i do not consider skeletonised knives like izula, which have a lot of positive feedbacks. Swamp Rat Vex or Busse Game Warden would be great - they seem to be a good compromise between custom-like finish of SB and classical non-threatening forms, like WM1, but they are difficult to get in Europe and are pricy. Since my hand is not very large, i dont think i would have problems with WM1. So my main concerns are: SB looks a bit too taktical for my taste (so may for LEO :) ), but i adore its fit and finish and ergo (from the photos), WM1 seems to be more suitable for me due to the better carrying options and general functionality, but i am afraid it may look to "cheap" and dont have such a good ergonomics, expecially comparing to SB

The thing with the WM1 is that it looks like a knife made for mushroom picking or scraping potatoes in the kitchen. Therefore it poses no threat to anyone if they see it. It is like a Victorinox, not dangerous at all.

It was designed as a knife for small hands (women) and for small game hunting.
It can also be used as a neck knife, both handle up or inverted.

The WM1 is a great little EDC. You can get it with wood or micarta handles, which make it look much better. The SB is also a top quality knife, but I find it to be less comfortable in EDC tasks due to the deep forward finger groove.

i have a WM1 in 3G steel in my back pocket as i type this.

it's a truly awesome knife.

Thanks! Looks like wm1 would serve well for me, gonna get one :) But does anyone have pictures of SB and WM1 together?
Also here we talk more on advantages of the knive, why we bought it and what we like about it. But it would also be intresting to know, why guys, who bought wm1 did not buy street beat and vise versa. By far if my memory serves, only the concerns of small and thin handle in wm1 and agressive look of ST and less comfortable sheath were mentioned.

By the way, I saw that you live in Sweden, so I quess the price for fallkniven knives can be better there. Do you know any reliable on-line shops with resonable prises, which also ship internationally (I am from Lithuania)?

Nice knfe, but how or where to get???

forget both and buy 2 izulas.

You could buy 4 Izulas for the price of those one of 2. I had a Street Beat for years and sold it bacause it's sheath was way to bulky for pocket carry which is where my Izulas ride in hoopster's custom kydex. I have to pat my pocket once in awhile to make sure it's in there. They're just small fixed blades, an Izula, Izula 2, Becker Necker, EsKaBar will all fill the bill just as well for a lot less $$. YMMV. ;)

i haven't handled the wm1, but i do own a street beat. i am a big fan of the large choil,it fits my hand really well. the sheath is a little tacital, so when in town or the city i switch over to a leather sheath i had made. the vg-10 takes and holds a great edge, especially after i switched to waterstones. i has completed camp duty with no problem, as well as skinning out and processing a couple of deer. i didn't notice the handle to be slippery when covered with blood and had no problem reaching/cutting anything on the deer. the only questionable thing about the street beat woul be batoning. i don;t think i am going out and beating on this knife, unless i had too.
