Spyderco Stretch - Do you have to own it to get it?

It seems to me that the Stretch doesn't get as much hype as other Spydercos, and I'll admit, I don't really think it's the most attractive in the line up. But from the reviews i see it seems like those that do own one love it. Is it a matter of function over form? I'm considering pulling the trigger on a stretch, so wondering what owners thought. Is there another Spyderco that would be a better option as an everyday/work user, under $100 and bigger than 3" but no more than 3.5"

i never really got it either, then the new brown G10 model came out and caught my eye. The subtle changes they made really make it stand out to my eye. I finally got one and it feels great in hand. I would recommend it. It now fights my trusty brown PM2 for work carry time

I'm a huge Stretch fan, I think the aesthetics of the thing are just beautiful. Mine is in ZDP-189 and its a razor, although I think that's more than $100. You won't be sorry.

Hi Slumblor,

Welcome to our forum.

I designed the Stretch 2 for me to use as an EDC. I'm quite satisfied with the results. We also plan to change the FRN molds to the new shape.

I'll put my love of the Stretch like this. I have sent a few knives out for sharpening and have awaited their arrival patiently. When I sent my SB Stretch out I traded for a Vg-10 version beforehand to take its place until it returned. To say I love my Stretch is an understatement. It is phenomal. The level of comfort it has is awesome. It really does fit like a glove.

Was looking for a bit more blade length than the Delica and Manix2. But the Endura is too long and the PM2 a bit too heavy. The Stretch seems to fall between the Delica and Endura but I wasn't really digging it.

But Sal carries one so it can't be all that bad.

Found a good deal on a SE Stretch on the Exchange and pulled the trigger. Me likey!

Just got a good deal on a ZDP Stretch off the Exchange and I think I've just found my new primary EDC!

I guess Sal was right ... again.

The Stretch is one of those knives that just fits my hand like a glove. YMMV but I highly recommend trying it. If you get the ZDP Green version I will buy it from you if you dont like it.

Depends on your work use. I mostly open boxes, letters, cut plastic film, etc so the Caly 3.5 is better for me at work. If I needed a tougher knife at work the Stretch would be perfect. I keep a regular Sterch in my car and carry a SB model when not at work, on the weekends, etc.

Although I have carried a Double Bevel all week on and off work and I am pretty much in love with it.

I've had a few Stretch models in FRN. Not that happy with the slippery scales. The blades were fine, but I really preferred the Caly 3.5 in ZDP. It's all opinion and how it fits your hand and your carry needs.
I hear the Stretch does well in the kitchen...

I agree, for me the Stretch was always a bit odd looking in photos. I bought my first one, a Superblue version, just for the steel. The design definitely grew on me once I received it and got first-hand experience of the ergos and blade shape. It quickly became my first choice for a full sized lightweight easy carry folder.

The Stretch is one of my favorite knives, and I've had one in my pocket nearly every day since they first came out in 2004. I like the handle because it has enough "structure' to retain my hand without forcing my fingers into specific spots, but realize that some folks want an even more structured handle, and some prefer one with less or no structure. I'm also a fan of 50/50 choils because they allow me to choke up on the blade, but there are folks whoo don't like them. The blade shape may look odd to some folks, but I like it.

Not too many choices with 3.5" blades for under a C note, but you could get an Endura and shorten the blade by 1/4".

Wish I had kept this one.
I did pick up a cf/zdp-189 version recently.

I still have my SB Stretch. It was my first Spyderco. Only the pocket clip shows wear, the finish is not very durable on the Spyderco pocket clips. Why can't Spyderco apply a more durable finish? My Endura in ZDP189 gets the most carry time and the clip on it has a worn down finish and looks crappy because of that. Now back to the OP topic........s...t....r......e......t......c......h

the stretch is a knife you must hold in your hand!because it fits like no other!and its one grate slicer, but i agree it needs a better finish on pocket clip,i own the plane-jane version of this knife with VG-10/black FRN,its my most loved spyderco.:)
