Spyderco Stretch - Do you have to own it to get it?

I love my Stretch 2. It feels great in my hand and it's built to handle real work.
I think this thread needs a few more pics..

I have had the combo version, the regular VG-10, the ZDP/CF and now only left with the Super Blue version. All great, I have just traded and sold like many of us here. I will probably have to pick up the new brown Stretch 2 and give it a try. I have definitely decided that my SB is a keeper for sure!

I guess these responses were what I was expecting, I suppose I just needed reassurance.

I went ahead and ordered a VG10 Stretch with FRN, I got a good deal so I'm hoping it'll be as great as it sounds. I didn't want to spend the extra for the ZDP-189, although I don't have any knives with that steel and I'd like to try it. But maybe if I like the Stretch I'll wait for the redesigned handle that Sal mentioned and go for the ZDP. I wonder if they will change the handle colour at the same time? I'm not really digging the British Racing Green. I am a fan of VG10, so this should do well, and spending less I won't be worried about actually using it.

Congrats on your Stretch Stumblor! I didn't really get it either until I took the plunge and ordered a SB Stretch. However it sat in the box for a while because it didn't "feel" like my Delica or "feel" like my Manix. I never got that immediate glove like fit that is so often talked about. I new better than to trade it away and one day I unboxed it again and just let my hand relax. I started to get it. The Stretch actually taught me to stop superimposing habits from other knives and to just enjoy what is being offered. I hope it serves you well.

I totally get where you're coming from knifeneasy, I hold all my knives differently because all of them are built differently, when you find that special way to hold your blade, the ergos really seem to kick in and you really feel it lock up in your grip.

Stretch is IMO an essential Spyderco archetype.
I for one am just a bit sad that this variation of the Stretch will be pushed to the wayside for a larger handled version.

This is one of those knives I've seen and guaged many reactions on... To many who have never handled a Stretch, or see one for the first time, they think it a bit odd and sometimes brush it off without a fair chance. But it is one of those shapes that the more you utilize it, it becomes increasingly pleasing, both aesthetically and functionally.

I love mine. Yes, you have to use it to get it.

At the $100 dollar price point I would buy either a Para2 or a Stretch. They are both awesome blades and neither is better they are just different. I like the comp lock better but the Stretch has thinner blade stock and a super functional blade shape. Both grips fit my hand well and I like both G10 and FRN so I carry both quite often.

Unfortunately, my Stretch experience is my one and only Spyderco disappointment. I bought a ZDP FRN model and it had awful blade play both up and down and side to side. Eventually, it seemed like there was no way I could find a balance between the play being minimized and it still being reasonably easy to open so I had to return it.

Nope, Stretch doesn't work for me. I've really tried to like it as I have no problem with the back lock, the blade shape or the FRN. The choil is just uncomfortable for me and not using the choil I perceive the end of the cutting edge to be too far from my index finger. I suspect that had the choil been deeper (even deeper than the new version) it may have worked because the Caly 3.5 feels great in my hand. I'm fortunate to have enough other Spydercos to love that not liking my Stretches particularly isn't a problem - Sal can't make knives that please all the people all of the time but he is very good at making things that please a lot of people a lot of the time, I'm just not there with the Stretch.

I want to like it, but don't. The Native and Stretch models just don't work for me. Luckily, tons of other Spyderco models do!

I have one and still don't really get it.

It's a fine, functional knife but could stand a few improvements/updates to make it more appealing to me. But, as a user, it's a keeper.

You do get it :) It's a user, not a supermodel ;)

Yeah like the Delica, for me it just outshines nearly everything else when it comes to USE and day to day tasks. It's more refined than meets the eye, it's lineage harkens all the way back to the C03 Worker, one of the very first models.

Just received my Brown G10 Stretch today. Fit and finish is superb and probably the sharpest knife out of the box ever for me. I'm very happy with the ergo's. I also have a Stretch in the FRN British racing green, and I like it just as well. I'm glad I have both now.

At first I was like "OMG he stole my knives!" then I looked at my Spyderpac and saw my SB and SE Stretches in their places. Nice taste my friend!

You either get it. Or you don't.

I had a zdp and a SuperBlue.

Not enough meat on the handle for me.

So both are gone and I am back to
the model that always finds its way back.
Endura in ZDP..

I'd say that's really true of any knife. Human hands come in too wide a variety of sizes and shapes for one size to fit all. No matter how good it looks in pictures, it may not feel "right" in your hand and no matter how many people rave about it, it may not work for you. Heck, even within a model, different versions can feel totally different.
