Spyderco Stretch?

I'm planning on buying a Spyderco stretch and I'm kind of turned off by the handle. I really think it would be a great edc knife but it is not visually appealing to me at all. For those of you that already have a stretch, can you give me some insight as to its capabilities and if the handle is functional.

Very, very functional. Great slicer that's extremely comfortable in hand. It's a worker, not a looker.
Everything he said. It is the only model I have more than one of. It gets prettier in time. It is very capable and just the right size. The handle just works. There is definitely a reason Sal designed this as his personal edc it is that good.

The Stretch is by far the most comfortable of the FRN models IMO, and one of the most comfortable of their entire lineup.

I'm not sure how much experience with Spyderco you have, but form really follows function in their knives. They may look a little odd at first glance, but they make a whole lot more sense when you actually get them in hand. After that, you'll be hooked... at least, I was.

One of the best designed folding knives ever. Big enough for most tasks, comfortable in hand with about as much blade packed into the handle as is possible.

The Stretch is my personal favorite large folder. Unless I'm headed into "beautiful downtown Greenville", where there's a 3" blade limit, there is always one in my pocket when I leave the house. As for the looks of the handle, that can always be changed. These days, I most often carry one of these...

...but still carry this one occasionally...

Where can I find some of those scales?

I personally buy knives to use. I don't get caught up on looks. The only knife to knock the Gayle Bradley out of my pocket is the Stretch. I have the FRN British racing green and the Stretch in Brown G10. The latest Brown G10 version is my favorite for ergonomics for my hand. The way a knife looks and the way it feels in hand is a very personal thing. I don't think you can go wrong with a Stretch for function and ergonomics and the looks may grow on you. Good luck with your search!

Thanks everybody. I love my Manix lightweight and it's been hard to find a knife that I enjoy having in my pocket more. Judging from all of your feedback, the stretch may be able to kick it out of my pocket (for a while). I guess I'll just have to wait until I get it in hand!

Where can I find some of those scales?
The ones on the far right are by suingab. They're cocobolo with a sculpted texture and replace the scales on the current FRN Stretch, using the original nested steel liners. The ones to their immediate left are by SKETCHENSCALES (Steve Ketchen). They're black palm with a similarly sculpted texture and replace the scales on one of the new G-10 Stretch 2's. Both these gentlemen do excellent work, and both have presences on this forum. The ones on the far left were done by Steve Rice (STR) back when he was still doing such things. They're lignum vitae over titanium liners and replace the stainless steel handle of an original "first generation" SS/Kraton Stretch. The knife to their right was a prototype for an Exclusive that never materialized and was made by G Sakai for Spyderco.

The one with the bolster is incredible. What a great look!!! They are all beautiful, but that bolster changes everything. WOW!

Do they add a lot of bulk to the knife widthwise?

as you can see! the stretch is vary popular knife, one really must hold the stretch to get it! after getting my first one i added 2 others to my collection, you can't get a approximate just looking at this knife, the fit of its handles is its biggest attribute i think! and its blade is one of the best slicers i ever owned.

The Stretch handle basically has the same profile as a Mule handle, but with an added choil.

This knife fits my hand, needs, and preferences almost spot on.

hey,i like to ask! the stretch on the far right, that was once a FRN modal right!because,i'd like to make some scales for mine if possible and hollow out some real nice wood to accommodate the liners, yours is the only one i have seen that looks like it was a FRN that was customized, thank you.

Edit, my mistake, was looking at the wrong one!

Yeah, that may be a task to take on, but good luck with the recessed liners!

How can I get a hold of suingab? Do you have his email address?
