Spyderco Tenacious Disappointment

Well I was excited to open my new green G-10 plain edge Tenacious, only to be disappointed for 2 reasons. The green G-10 wasn't quite the color that I expected from the online photos (more muted than expected, but still nice) and when I tried to move the clip for right hand tip up carry I discovered one of the clip screw holes hadn't been tapped to accept the screw.

I'm sure I could easily tap out the hole if I bought tap/die set, but I shouldn't have to. I called the online retailer (which I originally thought was very customer oriented) only to find out I have to pay to ship it back to them for their review & replacement...of a manufacturer's defective item. Now what should have been a great deal on this knife won't be so great because of paying double shipping. All in all I like the size & weight of the Tenacious and the blade geometry & sharpness. The fit & finish (other than the mentioned issue) was very good for a $40 EDC.

That is disappointing. I had the same clip screw issue with a Centofante. The middle screw. At first I left it out but that bothered me so I hammered in a slightly thicker screw I had laying around. Not a very good solution but it satisfied me.

I have never used Spyderco warranty, but I wonder if contacting Spyderco directly might yield better results?

Yea i may call Spyderco directly tomorrow, but i'm sure they'll still have me ship it to them at my cost. I checked all other holes using all 3 clip screws and only the one was untapped. Just my luck it was at the end where I like to have the clip.

Called Spyderco and same result, have to pay to ship defective knife back to them. So I just sent it back to the online retailer to exchange it. I could have tried to thread the hole myself but didn't want to mess it up and ruin any chance of warranty work later. They said I have to wait for them to evaluate it before they'd send a new one. Hopefully they'll have another one in stock or I won't be buying from them ever again. I know its just a $40 knife, but its the principle and good customer service that should matter. So now the wait begins...again.

The more I thought about this thread, I realized that there are defects - and there are defects.

If a knife came with a scratch on the blade, that is something that MIGHT POSSIBLY have happened at the dealer, or distributor. But nobody accidentally untapped a screw hole! In a case like this where there is NO LEGITIMATE EXPLANATION for what "might" have happened, I feel there is increased impetus on the manufacturer to make it right.

This is pretty much par for the course when purchasing products online. It's one of the few advantages of shopping at a traditional brick and mortar store.

Sorry you caught a bad one. I have a Tenacious and I love it. Great little knife for the money.

Hi RoadDog66,
I'm sorry for your disappointment. Could you please private message me with your mailing address and e-mail address?

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.

Kristi

Well I return shipped the Tenacious to the retailer (good enough folks so don't want to soil their rep) and it should be in their hands now, just hoping they get me a new one on the way quickly. And thanks for contacting me Kristi, sorry for the long winded email.

Kristi,
I tried PM'ING you but it didn't seem to let me and I also tried to send you an email. Let me know if you got it. Thanx.

I'll admit upfront that I'm anxious to get my new EDC to test out, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a quick turnaround when I had to pay return shipping to get them to look at a defective screw hole.

How long should an exchange take? Just called and my return package is still unopened on the retailers returns desk after almost 2 full business days :(

Like I asked earlier, who is the retailer? Some are far better than others. Seems like you are getting a raw deal here.

It's Knifeworks. I don't like bashing retailers until its been proven they deserve it so I'm still reserving judgement until I get the new Tenacious in hand. I was just ticked off because the first person I spoke to a week ago to get the RMA# was great and super nice & helpful. The person I spoke to yesterday to see if they shipped me my new one yet wasn't very nice or helpful. First I was told that it wasn't there yet and I don't think she even looked. It wasn't until I told her the USPS tracking info says it was dropped off at their reception desk first thing when they opened the day before. Then she put me on hold and went to look and came back and said "oh yea its on her desk". I asked if the new one would get shipped out by the end of business and she said "well there are several returns in front of you, but it might be". I said well this is a manufacturer defect for exchange not a return, but that apparently didn't mean anything.

Maybe i'm spoiled, but every product I have ever returned to a company for a defective product exchange was either exchanged & sent immediately or they sent a me new product before they received the defective product back.

Knifeworks is a great shop to deal with and Spyderco is a great company. I agree... if you don't want any waiting and want to look at centering, color, or whatever, brick and mortar are the way to go.

Sure buying at a local shop for another $10-$15 would have saved me this headache. I work very hard for my money and when I spend it I dont like being strung along. But online buying shouldn't mean lesser quality or lesser customer service. I've bought from Knifeworks in the past with no issues, but none were defective. I get that if I just didn't like the product then I shouldn't complain when I return it, but this issue is a manufacturing issue not a case of buyers remorse. Tomorrow is business day 4 since they received my return for exchange with no updates. Not acceptable in my book.

Sorry to hear about the problems with the screw. (I generally leave the screws and clips where the factory put them.)

I think the green is awesome. I bought a green one and a blue one, my daughter took the green one away from me. Fortunately I like the blue one also.

At this point I should have tapped the defective hole myself & saved the $6 return shipping.
