I'm looking for a budget knife and I came down to these two. They have received nothing but good reviews, but I have a hard time deciding which one to get.

I havent owned a Rat1 but I loved my tenacious when I had it. I'm actually looking to purchase another one eventually.

I have both and they are both great for the money. TBH, they are such a good value I would get them both :)

Have both, and both are excellent values.
Personally I prefer the Tenacious, but its really a matter of individual preference and use.

You might also want to look at the Ka-Bar Dozier Phat Bob. It can be had for $45 or less and I'd put in the same value class.

+1, or buy a CRKT M16 or M21. Great solid knives.

I would get the Tenacious for the following reasons: It is lighter than the Rat 1, It has a fantastic blade to handle ratio compared to the rat 1, The Spydie hole is quicker in deployment than the Rat, and you can also do the "middle-finger-flip" ( which may not be your thing), and 8cr13mov has a tiny bit more carbon content than AUS 8-if that is important to you. I have the Blue g10 Tenacious that I dissassembled and dropped the blade and clip in Ferric Chloride for 30 min and then rock tumbled for a real nice finish, and I have the all black "Tactical" one for those stealthy midnite missions where I gotta slit a throat undetected.
And just so you know, I have 4 RAT 1 knives: Black, Desert Tan, green, and I just barely got the one in Brown-which is prolly my fave, so I am a fan, but for EDC, I would give the nod to the Tenacious- So I am NOT a Rat hater.

I have had both and the Rat wins. I am not a huge Spyderco fan. I will also add I liked the Byrd Cara-Cara more than the Tenacious. They are rather inexpensive. But, of the two...... Rat 1.

Both are great knives. I prefer the tenacious because of how it feels in my hand and it seems to open smoother than the rat. Plus, the rat's pocket clip loosened up quickly. So if you buy that one, be mindful of that. Loctite.

Have never had the Rat. But my Tenacious has excellent fit and finish. It feels really good for an edc .

I like my Tenacious better that my RAT 1. But the RAT seems a like it might be a little tougher possibly. The RAT does not open as easy for me.

finally, someone else who doesn't worship Spyderco... I was just looking at a native 5 today but I think it's a bit overpriced at $120 or $130. I hate how most of the Spyderco blades stick out and are incredibly wide where the thumb hole is. In the Native 5 it is not so bad, and in fact I think that knife is pretty damn sweet. But knives like the delica, pm, and military all look so weird to me.

I have two Tenacious knives and they are good quality slicers. If you are looking for a budget knife that will take a beating I would recommend the Ka-bar Warthog. $18 with G10 scales great value

Rat 1

The thing is a tank and will last you for years, the eros are fantastic and for edc I love the blade shape. It might be a lil on the heavy side but if your wearing jeans it not a problem, unless you carry a large amount of stuff everyday....

Get one of each. They are both great knives and cost so little for what you get. You really can't go wrong.

(Me? I prefer the Tenacious, but YMMV)

+1 this. I have both...Rat 1 is definitely stout (Read: Heavy). Both are great, I still carry the tenacious every once in a while. The I keep the rat in a backpack as a backup
