Spyderco Tenacious or Ontario RAT 1

I just received my tenacious yesterday, so it may be the honeymoon period, but I'm very impressed.

Yes it is wide, but it is slim and hides well. And I prefer the looks to the rat.

For the price, you can't go wrong.

Both are grand knives for the price, but for me it boils down to thumb stud VS thumb Hole. I like the thumb hole better, though this is just personal preference. Both have great scales, for the price, and AUS8 and 8Cr13Mov, can get insanely sharp, and have serviceable edge retention. Spyderco is a great company, and has great support, as far as warranty type stuff goes, as does Ontario, both are well established companies.

finally, someone else who doesn't worship Spyderco... I was just looking at a native 5 today but I think it's a bit overpriced at $120 or $130. I hate how most of the Spyderco blades stick out and are incredibly wide where the thumb hole is. In the Native 5 it is not so bad, and in fact I think that knife is pretty damn sweet. But knives like the delica, pm, and military all look so weird to me.
I don't know about the rest but the PM2 is designed so that when your thumb is placed behind the hole, the blade follows the line of your thumb, like an extension. Some of the designs LOOK awkward but FEEL great, especially when you need to use multiple grips like choking up to get a more controlled cut.

I was never a fan of Spyderco's looks, but I have to say, they really win you over when you try them out. Tenacious is one of my favorite starter knives. It's the knife I buy people to get them into good knives. Rat-1 is a good value as well, as is the Kershaw S30V Blur. CRKT M16 isn't even in the same league. I dislike mine greatly, and regret buying it. Buy the knife that calls to you most though.

Can't comment on the RAT1 as I don't own one yet (though it is on my buy list) but I do have a Tenacious and I can honestly say it is very nice knife especially for the price. Blade opens up smoothly and locks nice and tight with no wiggle, comes scary sharp out of the box and fits my hands perfectly. Mines been my EDC knife for about a year now. For $35 you really can't go wrong with the Tenacious imho.
