SpyderCo Tenacious vs Manix 2

Hi All, new to the forums.

I'm looking for a Spyderco that offers a black coated non serrated blade and seemed to only come across these two models (I don't want a Para 2 or 3). I'm having difficulty deciding which one to go with so looking for some input.

Initially I was ok with the 8Cr13MoV steel and lack of finger choil on the Tenacious considering its price point of $44.00 but I was able to order a Manix 2 in FRNCP and CTS-BD1 steel from Amazon for $61.00 total.

I was excited to get it for this price until I learned that the Manix 2 does not have any steel liners and uses pins instead of screws. What to do?

You can get the Manix 2 with liners and DLC coating /w s30v blade steel, but it is going to be a fair amount more than your current budget. Could try to snag one on the exchange, but I don't see them come up often these days.

I did notice the Manix 2 comes in all sorts of configurations but I was just looking for a DLC coated Spyderco with a non serrated blade. I'm trying to figure out if I'm better off with a less premium steel (8Cr13MoV) with steel liners and G10 scale that I may need to sharpen more often or get the knife with FRN scales that has a better steel but no liners.

If the Manix 2 I'm looking at was $93.00 I would have just passed on it and bought the tenacious. I love my Delica 4 and how cool my griptilian looks in a DLC blade so that is why I wanted a DLC Spyderco.

Yeah, MAP price increases likely put a lot of Spyderco out of reach that would have the liner and DLC coating. Love my Manix 2 (plain edge and no DLC), but I don't know that I would have bit on it at current prices vs other offerings. Delica 4 was my gateway spyderco as well!

If you aren't in a hurry, keep an eye on the exchange. Also, I think non-paying members are allowed to post in the 'Want to Buy' forum in the exchange as well, so you might consider starting a thread for the DLC s30v Manix there. Might catch someone looking to move on from one.

Good luck either way!

If the Tenacious came in VG10 I wouldn't hesitate. I just dont have any experience with 8Cr13MoV steel

Some decent older threads on it on the forum. This one mentions it being similar to Aus-8 if you have any experience with that in knives like the Rat-1 or 2 and some of Cold Steel's stuff, etc. Personally, I think I agree with you on not being able to go below vg10.

Why not something like a delica 4? You might be able to find those for a decent price, and they'll be user-serviceable with liners.

It appears there is a Native 5 with DLC coating and orange scales, but I can't post it since they aren't on the approved vendor list. Should be a quick google for you though if you are interested in the native.

Edit: NM... frn handle...

I'm reading some threads about liners. If not having a liner doesn't impact integrity I guess I'd be ok without it.

I think you would like the LW MANIX because it is light weight.
Steel is about the same.

Tenacious has the smoothest action.
Even better than a PM2.

Get the Manix on the for sale section.
Secondary market is where I get most of mine.

I own a griptilian 550HGB and love flicking it open all day. The action is smooth on it as well.

That's a good question. If I knew that the manix has the better coating it would be an easier decision
I have a manix and its dlc coated. The tenacious is just listed as a black blade. The coating will wear way faster than dlc. Itll wear like Spydercos black pocket clips

If your not doing a heck of a lot of heavy use, the Tenacious is a good knife. I have the combo blade one and it is pretty good quality on the lower budget end.

The Manix is DLC, and the Tenacious is a black oxide coating.

Mind if I ask why you want the coating? Is it just for looks?

Well that just made my decision easier. Better coating, steel and just a lack of liners doesn't sound so bad now.

I wonder what Spyderco uses for their coating. Benchmade uses cerakote. (the stuff they coat guns with)

The knife is worth the money. I did buy it over a year ago before the price increase. I think it was $122 and change then. Still worth the new going rate.
