Spyderco Tenacious Vs Ontario Rat 1, High Value-Heavy Duty

Hey, look, a blast from the past.

At the time (two years ago), you could get a brand new Kershaw Cyclone with 13c26 steel, aluminium handles, speedsafe (or not) opening, FFG blade, made in the USA for all of 30$.

Now, the Cyclones have been discontinued for a while, but you can still get:

- a Ganzo G704 with 440c steel, G10 handles, well-executed Axis lock opening, for 14$
- a Kershaw Leek with 14c28 steel, speedsafe opening, and a steel framelock for 25-30$
- a Victorinox Pioneer with Alox handles for 20-25$
- a Buck Vantage Avid with 13c26 steel for around 40$, or a Vantage Select with 420HC steel for 20-40$
- an Ontario Utilitac in any number of configurations for 20-30$
- a Kershaw Needs work with 14c28 steel, speedsafe opening, for 30$
- a Boker Exskelibur with G10, titanium liner lock, and 440c steel for 40$

...and so, so many more. So, now when you go back in time two years, you'll know what knives to buy.

I only own one of those, the Vantage Avid, and if you consider it "way better" and "High Value-Heavy Duty" compared to the RAT 1 or Tenacious then you've seriously got to lay off the sauce. The Vantage series have some of the most pathetic liners and screws I have ever seen for the price. Great looking knife and the blade is higher quality steel but the handle isn't even comparable to the RAT 1 or Tenacious.

Again, you said there are "way better options" for a High Value-Heavy Duty folder. I think you are incorrect. I think that the RAT 1 and Tenacious would outperform every one of those knives as a High Value-Heavy Duty folder.

Stepped on a couple of your pet folders two years ago, did I? ;)

First of all, there's no need to go getting your nose in a joint over my opinion of the Rat-1 and Tenacious. If you like them, whatever, power to you, but why bother digging up a two-year old thread just so you can whine to me about how wrong I am?

Second, let me get this straight: you have found the Tenacious and Rat-1 to be better knives than everything on that list, without ever having owned/used any of the knives on that list?

See, for the most part, I've formed my opinions of these knives based on my use of them and my experiences with them. Instead of just getting your panties in a wad over my opinion, it would be a lot more useful for you to just go out and try some of these other knives for yourself so you can form a half-way informed opinion of your own.

Your bait does smell somewhat good. Unfortunately for you, I'm quite content because I own the better knives IMO. Just trying to see where your head is at, and I think I've gotten a good sense of that.

Your edification is my satisfaction.

Now go bother someone else, kiddo.

edification

Don't flatter yourself, LOL!

I was trying to remember how I found the thread in the first place. It was from a Google search Tenacious vs. RAT 1 after that guy posted that thread about all the places hes taken his RAT 1. My curiosity led me to you, unfortunately.

Cool story.

Now, I have better things to do, so, uh... Have fun.

definitely the RAT-1... the handle is very comfortable and I prefer RAT1 drop point shape.

Since this thread has been resurrected, I have a question.
I have the Rat 1 and really do like it. But at the same time I have been eyeing the Tenacious or possibly the Persistence. Obviously you can never have too many knives, but what would you all say is the "advantage" of the spydercos over the Rat1?
Thanks for any thoughts!

The Tenacious and the Rat 1 are both great high value knives, both only cost around $30, however they have great actions, very fast deployment, the ergonomics are excellent, very tough and utilitarian. Both flow through design. Adequate for a heavy duty User knife steels, Aus-8 for the Rat, and 8cr13mov on the Tenacious.
The Tenacious has slightly longer cutting edge, while the Rat has a larger blade.
Both not too heavy, Rat 5oz, Tenacious 4oz. Great Jimping on both. Both FFG blades. For me the Rat is more comfortable due to the larger handle, but both are very comfortable, and have solid and stable feel in the hand.

Which knife do you prefer?
And, Is there any comparable knife that can beat either for value and function?

Could you post a pic of these two side by side please.
See, reading the above has me scratching my head....I have a Rat 1, and a Tenacious. ...At least I thought I had a tenacious. I would not say it matches your description. (I'm wondering if I didn't get a Tenacious, but whatever is the next smaller one?)

Mt "Tenacious" has a shorter blade then the Rat 1, does not open near as easy, Nothing that mimics a switchblade like the Rat.

The Rat feels better in every way, feels stronger, and is the clear winner of the two I have.

When I feel like a one hander, its Rat all the way. when I want a little tradition, my #10 opinel is very close to the Rats size.

Cool, looks like mine is the same, (I looked at a pic saved on my computer, as I don't use the Tenacious, I put it away for reserve duty) By my picture its hard for me to really tell which has the longer cutting edge, but from the above it does kind of look like its the spydie. I'll have to dig it out over the weekend to compare in hand.

I do like spyderco, but just don't think the Tenacious is in the same leage as the Rat 1. Maybe an Endura vs Rat1 shoot out is in order?

what would you all say is the "advantage" of the spydercos over the Rat1?

The Tenacious has G10 scales vs. plastic so that should be some points in its favor.
The Tenacious has a more pointed blade which suits my personal preferences.
The Tenacious has the thumb hole in the blade which makes it take more room in the pocket but for me makes it more positive to open than a knife with thumb studs.
The handle of the Tenacious might be a bit small for people with large hands.

Thanks T.L. for the pics! I don't often see the Rat1 and the Tenacious side by side.
Maybe I will wait on the Tenacious as they are so similar and maybe get the Spyderco Dragonfly as I don't have a nice small EDC like that.

Way late to the party but I just bought my first Tenacious this afternoon (I already have a couple o' RAT-1s and a Persistence, though.) I like the Ten very much but the RAT-1 is a superior folder, imo...

I like my blue tenacious better than my desert tan rat1 because it is a little more comfortable to carry, thus gets more pocket time. To be truthful though, my frn Cara Cara and frn large Sogzilla are even better medium use folders: much lighter, agressive blade shapes, agressive jimping and grippier.
