Spyderco Tenacious vs. Ontario Rat 1 vs. ???

The Buck Vantage Select Paperstone (345BLS) is another really nice beater knife that is worthy of consideration in this ($30) price range....

I own both and prefer the RAT1 to the Tenacious, especially as a beater... In my opinion the RAT1 is a much more solid knife. The lock is super beefy and I prefer the aus8 to the steel used for the Tenacious. I carry it more than any of my other knives, including my xm18..

The only thing I would knock it for is the plastic scales which feel cheap and a bit slick for my liking, but they're also tough as hell

Also the "black paint coating" has held up surprisingly well

In my opinion it's the best beater knife you can buy in that price range.

Byrd Cara Cara 2. The FRN feels much better but the G10 has a better lockup. I don't see the point of the other two knives. Also, Tenacious fans seem to have a problem with grammar and basic sentence structure. :p

Good grammar and sentence structure are two of the qualities I look for in a knife.:)

G10 is probably the better handle material, but darn if I don't like FRN a lot, particularly the way its done by Spyderco.

Not sure G10 affects lockup...oh wait, maybe I didn't understand the sentence structure.;)

I picked up a Cara Cara 2 just because I'd heard so much about it. Darn good beater for $20.

The handles do get criticised quite often for their plastic look. Guess its hard to make Nylon look like wood.:D I rather like the look of my grey one.
They are a bit slick.
But you are right, they are darn tough.

rat 1 wins over tenacious for me...
enlan el01 and/or el02 wins over the above and theyre both cheaper

all of them are made in china ;)

I will second this statement would take the buck over the rat or the spyderco

+1

Buck Vantage Avid, would be my first choice and worth the 6 dollars over your budget, but Buck Vantage Force Select and Buck Vantage Select would be my preference over the Tenacious and RAT 1 and still fall within your budget as it stands.

Both are close overall but where I feel the extra value in the RAT-1 is the blade steel to be honest and the RAT-1 is very refined in its build quality. No dig on the Tenacious at all because it's a wonderful knife too but if I see both on a table and get to choose one it will be the RAT-1 hands down. Mine is a black scale, satin blade and it's really amazing how well the blade finish is done and overall F&F is on my RAT-1. The action is superb and the lockup is as good as my $500 knives. It's the only $30 knife I have in my rotation and that's for a good reason, to me.

What makes it superior in your opinion?

I believe the backspacer to be the difference- plastic versus steel.

I like my spidies but will say rat-1 for sure. Best sub 30$ with modern materials I can think of, dozier folders come a close second.

Well guys I pulled the trigger...

*Drum roll*

Spyderco Tenacious!

You guys gave me lots to think about and I was totally torn between the two...
That is until I saw the black edition Tenacious... the black hardware made the final push.
I just hope I can fight the urge to baby it, I needed a good blade to thump on.

Thank you all for your opinions!
