Spyderco Tenacious

The Tenacious is a very well designed light duty EDC folder. Lots of fun to carry and use. It also sharpens up very well. Love it!

Don't know why you call it "light duty." I gave one to my son who does apartment maintenance and uses it for everything from drywall to carpet and is in love with it! Against my advice he has used it to pry and it has held up to it just fine.

Ratbert- The Tern is a great little slippie. Had one for a while, but gave it to my son in law. I'm actually thinking of getting another one sometime.

The first Spydercos I got were a Tenacious and Sage 1. Both get plenty of EDC time.

The only reason I consider the Tenacious a "light duty" folder despite its obvious overall sturdiness is its lock. AFAIC it's a miracle your son's didn't fail on him. It's just a liner lock, after all. If I wanted a Spyderco to use a little harder I'd rather an Endura or Paramilitary 2.

That said, I like liner locks for their simple convenience and ease of use. It is my opinion that their strength is providing a basic, user-friendly lock that is meant for EDC rather than beating on.

I've been at it a long, long time and I've only had two liner locks that were weak enough to be of concern, both early Bokers. If you're doing something that would break a liner lock or any other properly designed and executed lock then you need a fixed blade or, better yet, a pry bar.

I think bang for the buck, the Tenacious is very hard to beat. Sure, it's made in China, not a big deal. The 8cr13mov steel does a great job for the price point, and the G10 handles hold up very well. Probably one of the best knives you can buy under $50.

Disengagement is the concern rather than breakage. That's a thick liner on the Tenacious, but it will slip if impact is applied.

I do agree with you about a fixed blade or a pry bar. I always carry both.

It's a good knife, but they seem to treat the 8Cr a little softer than Kershaw (for example)...my advice is to spend $20 more and get a Delica or Endura. For a really awesome budget knife, buy a Kershaw Thermite for $25.

The Tenacious came today, and I love it! Very comfortable, and the edge is wicked sharp. I had been carrying a Hissatsu Folder for EDC (I know, a lot of people cringe at the thought of a penetration purposed knife for EDC). It actually worked pretty well for everyday tasks, but I felt that I needed a knife that was purpose designed for everyday use. I will definitely carry the Spyderco more, though I still love my CRKT.

First Spyderco; carried since first year they came out (5-6 yrs? $28) It is my go to farm knife carried every day. Cut rubber mats, OK, cut hay bale twine around mower spindle no problem It has done anything I ask & farm work is not light duty. Have gotten Military, Embassy auto, Caly 3.5 ZDP and several Benchmades but the Tenacious is always in my jeans pocket when I go out to the barn. The liner lock is rock solid, would like to see an example of a failure in a Spydey liner lock, I can't .imagine it.

That blue is good looking, thinking I need a back up.
