Spyderco & Thumbstuds. Useful? Probably not. Can it be done? Yes!

Well, when I'm tired of studying (final year at university at the moment), I tend to go outside to split some wood or do some other jobs around the garden or in the field, but sometimes I just have to fool around a bit. First of, I want to say that I'm perfectly happy with my Spydies, I LOVE the opening hole but this evening I just wanted to try something for the heck of it.
I looked around between all the stuff we have laying around, and in a box of O-rings of different size, I found this thiker O-ring (If you can even call it that? I wouldn't even know what this would be used for) that was an exact fit for my Delica 4 FFG. I thought "Well, that's a coincidence that this stupid rubber thing fits just like that...". While I was thinking on how stupid it looked with that small little hole in the middle of the ring, I had an aha erlebniss. You know, that light bulb from the comic books... I thought "What if I found something that could fit right in this hole and act like a thumbstud?" Sure enough I found just that 'something' and the pics below show the result. With a bit of force, the whole construction can be pushed out, by the way. It won't budge if you flick the knife open, only when you put some vertical force on the thumbstud. Not that it would be useful by the way, heck, it would even reduce your slicing abilities when making food, but it works and I had a good time discovering it and playing with it so I thought I'd share it with you guys.

Now for the pics! The flash on the camera does show the scratches of this workhorse very well, by the way.
Sorry for the difference in picture quality/brightness/shadows. I ain't no professional photographer and artificial lighting s*cks:-)

I hope you guys enjoyed it, for what it's worth;)

Lol that's awesome, it looks like a crazy bird, with a crazy look in it's eye, the nut being the eye. That's looks like something i would do if i was bored. The blade looks nicely used.

Somewhere an Angel just lost it's wings.

I will say I do appreciate the ingenuity involved in fabricating the stud though. Good job.

Haha, thanks guys. I agree with the blasphemy thing and all, it was just for fun anyway. I already took it off ;-)

That would sure mess up my angle on the sharpening stone. Even the little thumbstuds get in my way.

Do you scrape the whole side of your blade against the stone?:D No, it would definately be in the way when sharpening (depending on the method ofc.)!

Pretty crafty. Everyone was getting tired of spydieholes anyway. Just like the Internet and organized religion. :)

I'm doing just fine with the spyderhole myself, but this looks pretty cool nonetheless!

Not quite that low of an angle. :) I do not think twice about running some of my knives at 20 degrees inclusive or less though. Some steels can take it for light/medium slicing duties. I don't hesitate with my VG10 enduras, for instance. I can slice the ink off paper currently with mine. That's freehand on a 6 inch, or 8 inch DMT with a loaded leather strop. It's DMT blue, which is coarse. It cuts really nice. :)

That's funny looking. Thanks for the laugh. You took something fullproof, made it bulky, ruined its efficacy and then posted a picture of it on the internet. :D I really love the absurdity of it. It really stuck a cord with my sense of humor.

Wow, that is quite an amazing sharpening job. Well done, sir!

That is exactly what I did! Great you appreciate the humor in the way it was intended. I'm glad I made you laugh :p

I like it! Since it isn't a permanent mod I don't see a problem with it!
It worked, but as I've stated before, the mod was very short-lived :D
