Spyderco Tuff: Ed Schemp & Spyderco got this thing right!

What is the slot along the blade for - looks or is there a function? Serious question
I like this one too.

The fuller is for weight reduction. And with a blade this thick I think it might actually reduce the weight rather than just looks.

It doesn't reduce weight by much on a blade of that length.

It does make a great handhold for a two-hand opening if adrenaline screws up your fine motor skills...cold can reduce finger/thumb dexterity as well.

And let's not forget its properties of a blood groove ;)

:) That was my first thought and then I had a 2nd and kept it to myself :D.

Weight reduction crossed my mind too but seemed less than effective and more just a design detail. Does add a note of distinction to an already good looking knife.

I just wish the choil wasn't so huge - for me it detracts both on comfort and usable blade length.

Try holding the knife in a hammer grip with the choil instead of a saber grip and it will make total sense to you. It is also nice when you're wearing gloves up to a fair thickness.

I was just searching for a thread from a few months back where someone reground the spine on their tuff. Anyone remember that one?? Can't seem to find it.

Oh cool, that was from before I joined. Thanks for posting that. I still wonder what it would look like maybe similar to that one, but then brought up to a wave right before the Spydiehole...? I've never held a Tuff yet, but I wonder how that might effect the balance. Might have to do some choice holes or backside reliefs in the handle to offset the blade weight loss... just pondering through words here, lol. :D

That is mine. I also have a standard. The reground one now wears handsome custom scales from SheppardCC - I need to take a new picture. As far as balance - it is still a hefty blade and I really don't notice any difference in balance. But I sure appreciate the point for point applications. It also carries a bit better in pocket with somewhat narrower overall profile.

Love this model. Sturdiest folder I own.

I've debated on getting one of these. Hopefully I see one for a decent price soon.. If so, I may pick it up. You may have just pushed me over the edge.

Fullers also add stiffness, oddly enough.

Ed's a great guy, and I like 3V. I'll have to try to fit one of these in the budget while they're still available.

Yes you do!

Tuff brothers :)
Lighting is not very good, but this gives an idea of what the reprofiled blade looks like closed and open. And check out the ShepardCC scale! White G10 and CF. White may not be ideal for a working knife, but it cleans up ok and I was going for a combo that matched one of our working dogs and he cleans up ok too
