Ok here is the other question that I have, those of you that have the above mentioned rods do they get the knife "that" sharp and by that I mean Scary, razor sharp, cut the hair on a fly sharp, and if so then what would it do to a D2 Para or Mili like the new D2 Para that I have.

I use a DMT Aligner clamp, and I'm able to get my Delica (VG-10) to split hair (kinda) using the white rods that come with the Sharpmaker.

By "kinda," I mean that the edge can't split the hair just by touching it. I still have to go kinda low toward the bottom of the hair where I'm holding it for it to start splitting the hair.

According to a grit chart I have, the difference between the particle sizes of the F and UF rods is only 2 microns (9 vs 7). Are the UF rods really worth it?

That is the question that I am asking myself if they are worth it or not because at about $17 a rod I don't want to just buy them and not see a good difference.

I can shave and splice hair on VG-10, S30V, S90V, ATS-34, AUS-8, and most of my kitchen knives just by progressing through the brown and white rods on my sharpmaker. I wouldn't say you need the ultra fine ones, unless your OCD about it like some.... :)

The UF stones are very worth it but like any new sharpening tool it takes time to perfect its use. I think the problem people have when starting to use the UF ceramic, is they don't use it enough or with enough pressure. You must spend more time, making more strokes for it to be effective. It also takes the edge to a whole new level of sharpness, its what I consider the start of a "smooth polished edge" and if you strop after it doesn't take as much time to finish. The particle size used in all of the "grits" is the same size. The differences in "grit" is the result of carriers, firing, machining and tumbling.

In the linked thread by Knifenut1013 where do I get diamond paste and what do I use it on, a leather strop and if so what do you recommend for a leather strop, I know that this is going off topic but it's my thread so I might be able to do that. And Sal your Sage advice is always welcome to this devout Spydie follower.
