spyderco v.s benchmade

I think in this case, as both brands are about equal in terms of quality, go for the design and blade/lock style that appeals to you most.

However, I have always been more pleased with my Spyderco purchases than my BM purchases.
 
I disagree with comp lock being ambidextrous, by the way.

At least on the Superhawk. Bottom line, get whatever appeals to you most. Both companies' catalogs should be out-browse through them, read the forums, see what you want. My personal recommendation would be a Military, or if you can find one for a good price, BM Mini-Skirmish.
