Any thoughts/comments on the Volpe? I'm eyeing it for dress pants wear. Any other ones in the Spyderco line-up to compare?

It's quite a nice knife but it's a little big/scary for a gent's knife I'd say. Also, it's a bit big to clang around in the bottom of your pocket, and knife clips often look out of place on dress pants.

Well if the clips can be taken off or if one comes in a black wire clip then no problemo. I'm checking out the Viele as well.

The Volpe only came in one version and it's clip is not like any other in the Spyderco lineup. I'm not positive if removing it is feasible. I tend to think that it would cause problems with the pivot because you couldn't leave that gap open between the screw head and the frame where the clip used to be. Turning it all the way down, if there's even enough room in the other side to take it, would likely render the pivot way too tight.

In any case, it's not a knife I thought of as going that well with dress pants. The Viele II would be a closer fit to the idea of a gentleman's knife. Has pretty deep carry with a black clip. Heavy for its size, but very solid and smooth.

The Volpe came in only one version, but there's now a smaller one called the SpyFox, built by Fox.

Depends a bit on your criteria for a "dress up knife". I'd put a C83 Persian in that category, others would not. The Volpe is fairly large, and fairly heavy, but is one of the nicest knives Spyderco has ever turned out in terms of fit and finish. Have not seen the SpyFox in person, but if it's as nice, it would be a classy looking small folder.

If you're looking for something dressy looking, others worth consideration would be the Kiwi, Micro Dyad, 75mm Persian, or one of the many flavors of Kopa.

If you are looking for a true "gentlemen's knife" from Spyderco, you might want to consider their Kiwi or Kopa models:

Both sheeple friendly, small enough for comfortable pocket carry, and a bit more "dressy" in appearance than plain SS or plastic grips.

If I'm wearing dress pants, the Volpe is in my pocket 50% of the time. If I'm wearing a suit, it's there 100% of the time. I don't think it's too large or heavy personally, however I'm not your average size either. Nobody has so much as blinked whenever I have used it either, I think the wood & the polish on it makes it look a little "friendlier".

I was going to suggest the spyfox, kiwi or kopa ,but I see I've been beat to it.

FWIW,I'd wear the Volpe in dress clothes.

The only problem with the volpe for a dress knife is that dress pants and stainless steel knives don't play well together in most cases. The pocket cut is wrong for a clipped knife and if you carry it loose in the pocket, it bulges and flops around banging your leg as you walk.

This is all relieved if you carry it IWB. SS in IWB is nice because most of them are quite thin.

I'll place a vote for the Volpe. It has the best fit and finish of any knife that I own and I always take it when I play 'dress up'.
