I just saw this over on the for sale by dealer section. I guess the Volpe is now out and ready to be sold? I have wanted one of these since I saw Alton Brown use one on Good Eats a few weeks ago. I guess he has a way of getting knives before most of us. I here he is a knife Knut.

So what is the verdict on this knife? I don't here much about it.

What exactly makes it worth $100? If you want a frame lock with N690 steel just buy a Monochrome for $30.

Now the question is ......How long before kgriggs8 will be able to trade someone for it?? :D

That's a very silly question and comment, INFI Kid.
What exactly makes it silly? You can get a Monochrome with the same steel and a framelock for $30 just about anywhere, How is this knife worth $70 more? Why not provide some examples please.

First of all, I don't care for either of these knives, for various reasons. So I'm not biased towards one or the other.

Second of all, just look at the two. The Monochrome looks like something that was thrown together with left over pieces of steel, and it's incredibly displeasing to the eye. It looks like something you'd buy at the grocery store off the counter for $5. The Volpe on the other hand looks like some thought was put into it's design. While not the type of knife I would buy, if I had to choose one, it would be the Volpe hands down.

Given the price difference, I'm also willing to bet there's a significant QC difference.

Finally, do you want a cheap knife, or one that will actually cut something. Spyders come from the factory sharper than most production knives.

Of course, with the exception of the last point, the rest is simply speculation. If you don't care for it, don't buy it.

That's what I'll be doing.

It's all about the intangibles. Why buy a Sebenza when a Bradley Alias looks the same and is much cheaper? Why buy an Endura instead of a Buck 110? They're both large lockbacks... Going by this philosophy, custom knives have no place in the world. Paying more is no guarantee of a performance improvement proportional to the price increase over a production knife. Variety is a good thing. Plus, competition leads to improvement. A great example of this is the new Endura and Delica.

I don't see anything special, certainly not c-note special, about this offering from Spyderco. I would pay 50-70 dollars for this knife and would probably even balk at seventy, I'd walk around it and "kick the tires" for a while no doubt. Spyderco offers an abundance of other knives that are worth the money anyway. Taking a pass on this one isn't going to keep me up nights. Cheers.

The Amsterdam preview folks report there will be mini-Volpes at some point. I'd love to check one of those out some time.
Might make a neat "Gent's" knife. :)

Are the wood scales inlaid? If so, that really has to skyrocket the price. Looks like a very nice knife.

Yes but the knives you are comparing are not 3 to 4 times more in price. I have handled Monochromes and I have several high end Spydercos. I still don't think it's worth $70 more. I guess that's just me.

I'm willing to bet the Volpe costs a lot more to manufacture than the Monochrome does.

Those may not be the best examples, but what I'm trying to say is knives are as much emotional purchases as practical ones. At least to collectors like us. A $10 SAK will accomplish most of what I need a knife for, but where's the fun in limiting myself to that? That said, I'm not too big on this Volpe either, not really my style.

It seems like most metal handled Spydercos just don't seem to sell all that well. I don't know why this is but I can't think of many metal handled SPydercos that were big hits. I am a sucker for Warncliff blades so I will probably have to try one out.

exactly what kind of steel is it? Does not show on the Spydie chart. Pricewice it should be on par with aVG10 or close to an S30V.

Everything that I've read about this steel in different forums says that on paper it compares quite closely to 440C but in real world handling it seems much more like VG-10. I've not had any experience with it myself so I'm just telling you what I've heard around the water cooler.

INFI Kid:

The difference between this knife and the monochrome is the difference between a knife made in Taiwan and a knife made in Italy. I know which one I'd prefer to own.

That's hilarious. It took you two sentences to say what it took me several paragraphs to say;)

Well said.

Scott, you said it. Monochrome looks much "rest-offs made". IMO, I would not buy the Volpe, but if you put these two next to each other, only a strong benchmadeist would choose the monochrome.
Blade shape of the Volpe is wonderfull. I dont like the wood slabs and the lock.
But I know that lots of people will buy it ;)
